New Ulm Sister Cities Commission Faces Leadership Change Amid Cultural and Recognition Initiatives.
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent meeting of the New Ulm Sister Cities Commission, changes and initiatives were discussed, including the resignation of the current chair, the authorization of cultural exchanges, and recognition efforts for key contributors to the sister city relationship.
The meeting began with the notable announcement of Tom Schmidtz’s resignation from his position as chair of the Sister Cities Commission due to his new role as a city councilor. This change necessitates the appointment of a new chair for the remainder of 2025. Despite an open call for nominations, no volunteers came forward during the meeting, leading to the decision to table the matter until the next meeting in February. Members were encouraged to reach out to potential candidates not in attendance to discuss the possibility of assuming the chair position.
In parallel with leadership changes, the commission continues its cultural exchange endeavors. The application period for an outbound participant to Germany concluded with three candidates. A subcommittee will conduct interviews and present a recommendation to the commission in February.
Furthering their recognition efforts, the commission discussed a presentation by the Narin, who are scheduled to travel to Germany on January 29th. The group plans to present a token of appreciation to the Tis family for their contributions to the sister city relationship. This gesture will likely include a letter of accommodation from the mayor, printed on parchment paper and presented in a formal folder. The commission unanimously supported the motion to request the mayor’s involvement in this initiative. A photograph of the presentation will be taken, providing a visual record of the event for the commission.
Keith Roloff was announced as the recipient of the annual recognition award for 2024, acknowledging his contributions to the sister cities initiative. A subcommittee is tasked with coordinating the award presentation, which may take place at the traditional venue, the Keg Club. Details such as the date, time, and logistics, including ordering the plaque, are still being finalized. The commission emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere for the award reception, maintaining the tradition of potluck contributions and casual interactions among attendees.
The commission also addressed several other administrative and programmatic matters. They approved the financial report for the period ending December 31, 2024, which included a $500 stipend for a trip to Germany. Additionally, the commission authorized the annual membership invoice to Sister Cities International for $440 for 2025. These approvals reflect the commission’s ongoing financial commitments and support for its cultural initiatives.
Discussions also included plans for a potential German language day camp later in the year. A subcommittee, featuring Carolyn, Ellie, and Jane, is exploring partnerships with individuals familiar with German curriculum, including a former teacher. Outreach strategies were discussed, highlighting the use of social media and municipal channels to gauge interest. Additionally, local radio stations may be contacted to promote the camp.
Committee assignments for 2025 were a focal point, with various subcommittees, including advertising and promotion, the German language subcommittee, and the recognition committee, under discussion. Members were encouraged to confirm their preferences, while absentees were asked to submit their choices via email. The commission also communicated logistical needs, such as the call for temporary note-takers for upcoming meetings and coordination for the flower watering program. An appreciation dinner on January 17th will honor those involved with the program.
