McGraw Hill Chosen as Top Resource for Financial Literacy Curriculum by St. Johns County Committee
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the St. Johns County District Media Advisory Committee selected McGraw Hill’s “Florida Focus on Personal Financial Literacy” as the recommended resource for teaching personal finance in high schools, following a detailed review and voting process. The committee’s decision will now be forwarded to the school board for final adoption.
The primary focus of the meeting was the evaluation and selection of educational resources for a personal financial literacy curriculum. Three resources were under consideration: McGraw Hill’s “Florida Focus on Personal Financial Literacy,” Ramsey Education’s “Foundations in Personal Finance Florida 2024 Standard and Honors,” and National Geographic Learning’s “Managing Your Personal Finances.” The evaluation process considered content, presentation, and learning outcomes. McGraw Hill received the highest rating, with 67% of the votes, while National Geographic Learning garnered 33%. Ramsey Education did not receive any votes.
During the presentation, it was highlighted that McGraw Hill excelled in content and offered significant online support features, such as read-aloud options, adjustable font sizes, and annotation tools. The resource also provides flexible professional development options for teachers. In contrast, Ramsey Education faced criticism for content concerns, notably regarding its objectivity and alignment with educational standards. Committee members noted that while Ramsey’s presentation was visually appealing, its content did not meet expectations.
The vote was conducted among teachers and community members, with the results being broadcasted both within the Zoom meeting and to the public via live stream. The committee’s recommendation, as per the procedure, will now be submitted to the school board, which holds the authority to adopt educational materials.
