Lifeguards Honored for Life-Saving Efforts at North Port City Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The North Port City Council meeting featured the commendation of lifeguards Jane de Clerk and Bro McMahon for their critical response to a medical emergency, alongside discussions on emergency preparedness and the recognition of the Parks and Recreation Department’s national achievements.
One item at the meeting was the recognition of two lifeguards from the North Port Aquatics division, Jane de Clerk and Bro McMahon, for their exemplary actions during a medical emergency at War Mineral Springs Park on November 23, 2024. Their swift response and effective teamwork were pivotal in rescuing a woman in distress. Devon Pulis, the Aquatics Manager, recounted the incident, emphasizing the lifeguards’ quick thinking and CPR skills, which sustained the woman’s life until Emergency Medical Services arrived. Their life-saving efforts were acknowledged at a national conference, where they received a standing ovation and the Professional Rescuers Award from the Red Cross. Pulis highlighted the rigorous training that lifeguards undergo, stating, “When things go wrong, there are no second chances,” and praised the collaboration with North Port Fire Rescue, which includes joint training sessions to enhance emergency preparedness.
The meeting also celebrated the North Port Parks and Recreation Department, recognized as a national gold medal finalist for excellence in park and recreation management. Lisa Paradis, representing the American Academy of Parks and Recreation Administration, presented the award, noting that it honors agencies that exceed industry standards. She praised the department’s efforts in addressing conservation, equity, and health and wellness. The Parks and Recreation team received enthusiastic applause for their dedication and commitment to public service.
Another topic covered was the importance of emergency preparedness, particularly the concept of a “go bag.” Stacy Loio, the Emergency Management Coordinator, stressed the necessity of having a well-prepared go kit with vital documents like IDs, insurance papers, and titles for homes and vehicles. She advised residents to include essential items such as medications, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio tuned to 97.5 FM for emergency broadcasts. This preparedness is crucial in events like flooding or severe storms to prevent losses and ensure safety.
The council meeting also recognized two individuals, Jan and Brody, for their exemplary service to the community. Jan was commended for her dedication during Hurricane Ian, where she continued to serve citizens despite her home being affected. Brody, who has been with the city for over four years, was acknowledged for his perseverance through personal challenges and his successful completion of fire and EMT school. Their commitment to serving the community was celebrated, with a speaker stating, “These two individuals exemplify the best of what it means to be a lifeguard, a first responder, and a dedicated public servant.”
In addition, Chief Gorski presented a Life Saving for Excellence Award, emphasizing the importance of the honorees’ actions in the context of the American Heart Association’s “chain of survival.” The praise for their contributions was met with audience applause.
Furthermore, the meeting included a proclamation declaring February 2025 as Career and Technical Education Month in North Port. This highlighted the significance of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in preparing individuals for high-demand careers. A representative from Suncoast Technical College, Mr. Michael Andy, discussed the college’s growth since 2017 and its impact on the community, noting the large number of firefighters and EMTs trained through its programs. He also announced a recent achievement in securing $7.5 million from the County Commission through the SRQ Resiliency Grant for the college’s expansion. Moreover, a new HVAC program will launch thanks to a state grant, further strengthening workforce development efforts in the region.
