Hoboken School Board Plans Infrastructure Upgrades and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The Hoboken School Board meeting in February 2025 focused on infrastructure upgrades across the district, including an imminent boiler replacement at Hoboken High School, while also celebrating the accomplishments of students recognized as January’s students of the month. Financial updates revealed secured federal funding, though uncertainty remains regarding state aid.
A major focus of the meeting was the detailed facilities report, highlighting urgent infrastructure needs within the district. Notably, Hoboken High School is set to undergo a boiler replacement, a project anticipated to commence without disrupting daily school activities. The board also discussed necessary upgrades to locker rooms at U Stadium and the challenges posed by scaffolding at Demorest School. The board is considering replacing the scaffolding with netting, which would maintain the historic property’s aesthetic while addressing safety concerns. Coordination with the Hoboken Police Department was noted as part of the efforts to streamline these maintenance activities, particularly with tasks like tree trimming at Wallace and Brand schools.
In financial matters, the board received confirmation that federal funding for the current budget cycle is secure, despite rumors of potential changes. However, the board awaits further information on state funding, expected around the governor’s budget address on February 25. The meeting also highlighted the clean annual management report from auditors, who found no issues across 11 reviewed categories, earning the business office praise for their diligence.
Adjustmentsttention was given to the recognition of students who exemplified exceptional qualities. Aaron Bishop, from Hoboken Middle School, was honored as January’s Student of the Month. Known for his respectful demeanor towards peers and teachers, as well as his contributions on the school basketball team, Bishop’s character development and aspirations to play League Baseball were celebrated. Elton Zang, from Hoboken High School, was also recognized despite his absence. Zang’s seamless transition from Lincoln High School, his academic excellence, and his interests in reading, boxing, and engineering were highlighted by various school officials. His role as a positive role model within the school community was commended.
Student representatives provided updates on recent activities, including the Hoboken Middle School’s participation in the Expedition Mars program and the undefeated start of their boys’ basketball team. The success of the Great Kindness Challenge and HMS Bingo Night were shared, alongside anticipation for upcoming events like the staff versus students basketball game. Hoboken High School representatives reported on auditions for a new Redwing mascot, the publication of the Redwing Realm literary art magazine, and the success of the Hoboken hockey team, which won the McMullen Division Championship.
The wellness committee discussed introducing a triop sports agreement with Weehawken and Secaucus high schools for girls’ ice hockey. A $100,000 grant was noted for recreational improvements, earmarked partly for the Brand rooftop project. Efforts to implement a peer mediation initiative at Hoboken Middle School were also highlighted.
Routine governance matters included the approval of staff appointments and resignations, contract modifications, and stipends, particularly for athletic directors. The board approved a contract for the YWCA to operate a summer camp program using district facilities. The interim School Business Administrator position was addressed, with Dana Sullivan set to assume the role following Joyce Good’s retirement in March.
The meeting concluded with a consent agenda motion passing unanimously, followed by an executive session to discuss contractual matters. Upon returning, the board moved to negotiate a lease agreement for pre-K classroom space, with a resolution approved to initiate these discussions.
