Union Town Council Approves Community Safety Measures Amid Active Police Efforts
- Meeting Overview:
The Union Town Council meeting focused on several pressing community safety and infrastructure issues, approving measures like amendments to zoning and parking regulations, while also highlighting a successful police operation and ongoing recruitment for the Neighborhood Watch program. The council also discussed significant public works efforts and community events, with a strong emphasis on resident engagement and safety.
A major highlight of the meeting was the Union Police Department’s successful operation in tracking a stolen vehicle from Philadelphia. The vehicle was located in a local parking lot through GPS, leading to a suspect’s arrest after officers conducted surveillance. The police also announced an ongoing recruitment drive for their Neighborhood Watch program, encouraging residents to join efforts to enhance community safety.
Public Works Commissioner Emanuel Figorito reported on the department’s handling of a recent snow and ice event, emphasizing the challenges of maintaining safe roads and sidewalks. The department oversees 28 parking lots and 65 crosswalks, with efforts focused not only on residents’ convenience but also on ensuring first responders have access. The public was reminded to report any concerns, particularly regarding tree management near power lines, through the township’s website.
Fire Commissioner Patricia Frasier provided updates on the Union Fire Department’s activities, detailing their response to 235 emergency calls during the reporting period. Of these, 114 were medical in nature. Significant incidents included a precarious large display sign on Route 22 West and two basement fires, one of which resulted in injuries due to a candle mishap. Frasier also shared winter fire safety tips, urging residents to keep chimneys and vents clear and maintain working smoke alarms.
Among the ordinances discussed, the council approved several amendments aimed at improving local infrastructure and safety. Notably, they adopted an amendment to Chapter 170 regarding zoning requirements, which regulates area, yard, and bulk requirements, and addressed regulations for the removal and replacement of trees within the township. These ordinances received unanimous approval without public opposition. The council also approved the creation of a handicap parking space on Walker Avenue and amendments to parking by permit regulations affecting Caldwell Avenue.
Draft ordinances introduced for first readings included amendments to parking prohibitions and one-way street designations on Bonell Court, as well as the creation of a stop intersection at Ugat Avenue and Townley Avenue. Additionally, the Styers Avenue Redevelopment Plan was moved forward for future consideration.
The council authorized several resolutions for township purchases, including locks and keys, landscaping equipment, and fence repairs, as well as a significant contract for guardrail replacement. Financial services were expanded with increased allocations to NW Financial Group and W Goldman and Spitzer for advisory and bond counsel services, respectively. The council also approved a lease amendment with New Jersey Transit, extending it to February 2030, and authorized the lease of township property to Maxon Auto Group.
During the public comment segment, a resident, Ruth Sovic, raised concerns about the clarity of resolutions passed by the council, particularly regarding amendments to the D Avenue Redevelopment Plan and financial increases for projects. She advocated for more detailed explanations in future resolutions to prevent public confusion and enhance community understanding.
Deputy Mayor Joseph Florio discussed upcoming events organized by the Senior Center and Recreation Department, including a health and wellness fair and AARP tax assistance. A new department within the Senior Center, focusing on Military and Veterans Affairs, will host an informative session on veterans’ benefits and tax relief programs. Various community events, such as Valentine celebrations and a casino trip, were also promoted.
In a noteworthy moment of community engagement, the Mayor announced a workshop for entrepreneurs and small business owners scheduled for February 20. This event aims to provide essential resources to help local businesses thrive.
