- Meeting Overview:
The Northern Highlands Regional High School Board of Education met recently to discuss and approve a series of substantial infrastructure upgrades and educational enhancements for the 2023-2024 academic year. The meeting encompassed a range of topics, including significant budget approvals for field and infrastructural improvements and a detailed briefing on safety and educational policies by Superintendent Dr. Scot Beckerman.
The most substantial approval of the night was the award of a contract to Applied Landscape Technologies for field enhancements at the high school, amounting to $1,425,947. Following closely was the contract with Athletic Fields of America, approved at $985,873.90, which will cater to the procurement and installation of turf field materials through the Sourcewell Cooperative Contract. Other notable improvements included project-related change orders with Daskal LLC for the field house project, which encompassed the creation of a reflection garden and a new gas line route, amounting to a total of $362,028.92.
Aside from budget allocations for infrastructural developments, a prominent part of the discourse surrounded the safeguarding of student welfare. The board exhibited their commitment to the students’ wellbeing by acknowledging and authorizing several reports and policies geared toward creating a safer and more nurturing educational environment. Noteworthy among these were the Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying Investigations report, and the Student Safety Data System report reviewed by Dr. Beckerman. In addition, a policy regarding school threat assessment teams was presented for a first reading, heralding the board’s proactive stance on ensuring safety in the school environment.
The board preemptively approved an emergency virtual or remote instructional plan for the upcoming academic year. Also acknowledged were an Intervention and Referral Services Annual Report for the previous school year and the endorsement of a revised school calendar for 2023-2024.
The board cemented a dual enrollment credits articulation agreement with Bergen Community College.
The board approved a series of staffing decisions that involved appointments, rescindments, and compensation adjustments. New appointments included Mariluz Ruiz-Norena and Stephen Opremcak, fortifying the teaching personnel for the upcoming academic year. Board President, Mrs. Christine Ferrarie, expressed gratitude to Matthew Lee from the NJ School Boards Association for guiding the board in setting prospective goals for the upcoming year.
