Margate City Council Considers Veterans’ Banner Program to Honor Local Heroes
- Meeting Overview:
The Margate City Council meeting focused heavily on a proposed veterans’ banner program. The banners would be displayed from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with families of veterans able to request a banner for an initial cost of $150 and a $50 annual maintenance fee. The program seeks to recognize all veterans with a connection to Margate, regardless of whether they served in combat or overseas.
The proposal, inspired by a similar initiative in a small New York town, was presented by Judge Savio and Anthony Edge. Savio emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating his concern about inadvertently excluding any deserving veterans. He discussed the potential involvement of local electrical contractors for installation and acknowledged the need for community outreach to ensure all eligible veterans are recognized. Social media and local radio were suggested as tools to spread the word about the program. Savio also noted the historical significance of the initiative, with many families already expressing interest in participating.
To verify veteran eligibility, the DD Form 214 was identified as the necessary documentation. However, concerns were raised about the time required to obtain this paperwork, which could be cumbersome for families. Judge Savio shared his personal experience of waiting for his father’s documentation since January, highlighting the potential delays in the process.
The discussion also addressed the potential for fundraising to support the program. Local establishments, such as the Log Cabin, had offered to assist with financial contributions through special events, though clarity was needed on managing and collecting the funds.
The meeting included a broader conversation about the recognition of veterans, with participants emphasizing the importance of quick action to prepare for the upcoming Memorial Day. The estimated cost to proceed with the project was noted as $2,600 for the initial set of banners. Potential locations for displaying the banners were discussed, including using poles from an electric company and considering areas such as the Parkway and various avenues within the city.
In addition to the veterans’ banner program, the meeting also covered several updates on ongoing projects within the city. An engineering report highlighted progress on multiple initiatives, including dredging projects nearing permit submission and the Washington Avenue streetscape project in a similar stage. The Amhurst Avenue Pump Station project was discussed, with progress made through the Green Acres process. Upcoming road projects, particularly on Winchester Avenue, were in the design phase, and the service line replacement program was ready for submission pending additional paperwork.
Plans for a new Public Works building were expected to be finalized by the end of the month, including a cost estimate for potential funding.
Chief Adams provided insights into the department’s OSHA logs, confirming that work-related injury records had been posted as required. He reported on the department’s improvement in injury rates, noting a reduction in their loss ratio from 66.3% in 2021 to 27.4% in 2022. Ongoing efforts to manage occupational health and safety were noted.
Chief Hinson discussed improvements to the municipal parking lot at Benson Avenue, highlighting the removal of an outdated brick facade to enhance visibility and access. He expressed optimism that these changes would increase usage of the parking area, strategically located near businesses on Amherst Avenue. The project aimed to better serve the community and prepare for the busy summer season, with all improvements expected to be ready by Memorial Day.
