Olmsted County Appoints Interim Administrator Amid Veteran Services and Medicaid Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Olmsted County Board of Commissioners meeting, the appointment of Pete Geeson as interim county administrator was a focal point, alongside discussions on veteran services and ongoing Medicaid challenges faced by residents.
The board unanimously approved the resolution to appoint Pete Geeson as the interim county administrator, following the planned departure of Heidi, the current administrator. Geeson, the Deputy Administrator, was praised for his leadership qualities and respect among staff. In his acceptance, Geeson acknowledged the progress made under Heidi’s leadership, while also emphasizing the need for continued advancements in the county’s administrative functions.
Public comments at the meeting brought to light issues surrounding Medicaid services. Jay Palmer, a resident accompanied by his son Jay Daniel, shared their experience with navigating Medicaid requirements and the resulting complications. Palmer recounted a January incident where a form required for Jay Daniel’s Medicaid eligibility was submitted but not processed correctly, leading to a termination notice from Medicaid. The ordeal involved multiple correspondences and a delay in reimbursement, highlighting systemic communication issues. Palmer’s plea for the county to consider the struggles of those unable to advocate for themselves resonated with the board, emphasizing the critical nature of effective communication and support systems within public services.
Veteran services were another major topic, with discussions focusing on improving accessibility and outreach. Tiffany, a lead in veteran services, introduced Karen, a veteran service officer with over three decades of experience, to discuss recent enhancements in service delivery. Karen highlighted the technological advancements and program improvements that have streamlined assistance for veterans.
The discourse revealed challenges veterans encounter, such as the VA clinic’s inadequate advertising of contact information, causing confusion and delays in accessing services. Efforts to improve communication and service accessibility were detailed, including adjustments to office hours and the introduction of direct contact methods to facilitate better service delivery. The importance of normalizing conversations around mental health issues like PTSD to encourage veterans to seek available resources without stigma was also stressed.
Further, the board explored the organizational structure of the veterans’ services within the county government. It was explained that housing these services under the Health, Housing, and Human Services department allows for a more integrated approach, breaking down silos and ensuring veterans have access to various support systems. This structure, led by a veteran administrator, was touted as fostering a dedicated support network vital for the department’s effectiveness.
The meeting also addressed the county’s recreational developments, notably the progress on trails connecting the city to Chester Woods Park. Although no new trails are planned, the completion of ongoing projects is anticipated, with discussions about necessary parking facilities to accommodate increased bike traffic. Concerns about not applying for grants to build a Welcome Center were raised, with suggestions to explore cost-reduction strategies for the associated infrastructure.
Additionally, the session covered environmental health updates, including new regulations affecting vacation home rentals and the responsibilities tied to cannabis legalization. An annual report from Three Rivers Community Action was reviewed.
