Fridley School Board Celebrates IB Achievements and Advances Early Childhood Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The Fridley School Board meeting on July 16th focused on recognizing the academic accomplishments of International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma recipients and addressing developments in early childhood education and district construction projects.
The most notable event was the recognition of six students who earned the prestigious IB diploma, joining a select group of 76,000 students worldwide. Superintendent Dr. Brenda Lewis introduced this achievement, expressing gratitude for the support provided by the board and district leadership. The IB Diploma Programme coordinator elaborated on the rigorous requirements the students met, which included 15 exams, seven essays, and extensive community project reflections. The students shared their experiences. One student planned to study mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota.
In addition to celebrating academic success, the board addressed early childhood education initiatives. Dr. Amy Fing discussed efforts to increase enrollment in early childhood programs and enhance family engagement. The current screening process for kindergarten entry was identified as a challenge, with many students being screened only after starting school. To address this, plans were proposed for mobile screening units and walk-in services to improve accessibility for parents. The district aims to fill all available preschool seats, with 191 families of four-year-olds yet to enroll. Discussions also included exploring full-day preschool options without payment barriers, recognizing the need for accessible education programs for all families.
Further updates were provided on district construction and remodeling projects. Michelle Cox, the new senior officer of operations, reported that all projects were on schedule despite supply chain challenges. Notable updates included the development of a new parking lot at the Fridley Community Center, renovations at the Fridley High School, and improvements in special education spaces at Stevenson and Hayes Elementary schools. These efforts aim to enhance the physical learning environment and support educational outcomes.
The meeting also covered strategic planning and budget considerations. The superintendent emphasized the draft roadmap’s focus on belonging, accountability, and partnership. The budget discussion centered on supporting staff and maintaining a fully staffed district, particularly in teaching and special education roles. The superintendent noted the district’s unique position in retaining school resource officers amid legislative changes.
