Pierz City Council Advances Floodplain Ordinance and Approves New Fire Truck
- Meeting Overview:
The Pierz City Council convened on July 22, 2024, addressing several issues, including the adoption of a floodplain management ordinance necessary for federal insurance access, the approval of a new fire truck now operational, and various permits tied to community events and infrastructure projects.
The meeting opened with the council’s consideration of a floodplain management ordinance, crucial for residents to access federally subsidized flood insurance under the National Flood Insurance Program administered by FEMA. With a deadline of July 31, 2024, for implementation, the ordinance was discussed in a public hearing. Despite the importance of the ordinance, there were no questions or comments from either the council or the public.
Another highlight was the update from the Fire Department. Fire Chief Dan Russow announced the arrival and deployment of a new fire truck, which has been outfitted with decals and put into service. Additionally, the council approved the appointments of Scott S as assistant chief and Dustin Binger as secretary, following recommendations from Chief Russow.
In planning and zoning matters, the council tackled a variety of permits. Among them was a permit for a mobile home in the local park, submitted by Todd Weir. This permit raised questions due to the mobile home’s non-standard size. The council decided to approve the permit conditionally, contingent on verification from the building inspector that it complies with necessary codes. Two additional permits were approved without issue: a concrete permit for a residential driveway and a sidewalk repair permit for Holy Trinity Catholic School.
The council also considered a solar application from Tim Dietrich for a property on Vincent Street South, which was unanimously approved. Further, the appointment of election judges was agreed upon, with selected individuals scheduled to undergo training in preparation for upcoming elections.
Community events were another focal point, with the council approving several permits. A gambling exempt permit for an October Fest-related event by the Lions was passed without opposition. Police Chief Eric Hkin presented a permit request for the “Walking Wings” event, planned for August 24, 2024, on Main Street, which received unanimous approval. While the exact location for the accompanying fireworks display is yet to be finalized, discussions suggest a potential site near the softball fields to ensure safety.
The council also heard a proposal for a special event permit for a Paul HOA benefit organized by Barb Treader from Boot Leers Bar, scheduled for September 14, 2024. This event, set to occur outdoors, was approved unanimously, aligning with the city’s tradition of supporting community gatherings that have previously been well-received.
Public Works provided updates on ongoing projects, including mosquito spraying operations and pending crosswalk painting, which is delayed due to nearby construction. The department is also preparing for pavilion maintenance in the fall, utilizing a new paint sprayer for efficiency. Work on underground infrastructure is reportedly progressing well, with home hookups expected soon.
A proposal for purchasing a Toro cart was presented, highlighting the potential acquisition of a new and several used options. The council approved the purchase, deeming it a necessary addition for maintenance tasks. Fertilizer needs for the new 18-hole course were discussed, with the department authorized to proceed with purchases as needed.
During infrastructure discussions, concerns about a deteriorating conduit at the fire hall and reshouldering plans for Centennial Drive were raised. The council was briefed on a sinkhole issue on First Avenue, which is slated for prompt attention.
