Zumbrota City Council Approves Grant for Pedestrian Safety Beacons on State Highway
- Meeting Overview:
The Zumbrota City Council has approved a grant-funded project to install pedestrian safety beacons on Main Street, part of the state highway, after receiving community support. The project involves the installation of push-button crossings and rectangular rapid flashing beacons at key intersections to enhance pedestrian safety.
During the meeting, it was announced that the city had successfully applied for and received grant funding from the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s local partnership program. The project, which garnered community support through multiple letters, aims to install push-button crossings at Second, Third, and Fourth Streets. The beacons are designed to flash when activated, promoting safer pedestrian crossings on the busy state highway. Final plans and specifications have been submitted and approved, and the next steps involve entering into an agreement with the state and moving forward with the project. Discussion during the meeting highlighted the potential lead time of four to six weeks for equipment delivery, with concrete work also required as part of the installation process.
In other developments, the council discussed ongoing environmental management issues. The city is undertaking a PFAS management plan following tests that revealed trace levels of PFAS in wastewater effluent. To comply with pollution control agency requirements, additional testing is scheduled for the fall, with future actions dependent on the results.
The council also addressed public safety and infrastructure through the approval of accounts payable, including payments for siren repairs and ongoing street projects. The Mill Street and Sixth Street projects continue to progress, with concrete curb and driveway installations scheduled for mid-August and asphalt paving anticipated by late August.
Additionally, the council approved the final payment for the boulevard tree removal project under the shade tree grant. The project involved the removal of trees and re-establishment of vegetation, with future maintenance focused on ensuring the success of newly planted areas.
