This grant is designated for completing remaining demolition activities on the east side of City Hall, with McGoff Construction spearheading the project. The demolition is set to begin shortly, with an estimated duration of six weeks. The redevelopment efforts aim to revitalize this area of Moorhead, promoting further economic growth and development. Infrastructure improvements, including the connection of Fifth Street to City Hall and expansions to Red River Avenue and Minnesota Avenue, were also discussed as crucial components of the city’s development strategy.

The meeting also highlighted the success of the Emory Apartments project, which has provided a vital blend of affordable and market-rate housing in Moorhead. Of the 130 units, 52 are designated as affordable, addressing the local shortage of affordable housing. The project has received robust support from the council and EDA, particularly amid challenges like rising construction material costs. Council Member White was credited with advocating for additional terms to ensure the project’s completion. The Emory Apartments project has been well-received, performing exceptionally within the Enclave portfolio and underscoring a broader issue of underbuilding in the area.

In addition to housing, the meeting covered a variety of economic development topics. The relocation of Morehead Vision to a new space near Azul Plaza was confirmed, with the EDA expressing support for the business’s transition. The move is seen as an opportunity for Morehead Vision to thrive in a new location, with additional rental opportunities still available in the area.

A noteworthy event discussed was the Morehead Area Day at the Capitol, held on March 4th and 5th, which saw participation from over 30 community leaders and business representatives. This initiative included dialogues with legislators on issues like the sustainable aviation fuel project, flood protection, and paid family leave. The sustainable aviation fuel project, in particular, received bipartisan support, highlighting its importance to Moorhead’s legislative agenda. Senator Anne Rest notably remarked on the project’s significance, citing it as the most important bill she has encountered in her four-decade career.

Looking ahead, the EDA mentioned an upcoming trip to Washington, D.C., to meet with representatives from DG Fuels, the company involved in the sustainable aviation fuel initiative. This meeting is anticipated as an opportunity to explore collaborative funding prospects at the federal level, furthering Moorhead’s economic development objectives.

The meeting also addressed community engagement efforts, with the Minnesota Department of Transportation hosting an open house on upcoming road construction projects. This event, which attracted local business leaders and community members, emphasized the importance of staying informed about developments. A hotline was provided for businesses to receive direct updates.

A proposal for a casino hotel convention center by the White Earth tribe was also discussed. Situated in Moorhead’s extraterritorial growth area, the tribe has acquired land for the project, although no formal request has been presented to the city council. The EDA expressed a strong desire for transparency and communication from the tribe regarding project developments.
