The meeting began with the confirmation of Alex DeGus’s appointment to the Long Hill Township Board of Education. Sworn in by Robin Bulmer, the business administrator and board secretary, DeGus’s entry was witnessed by Frank J. Morano, Esquire. This appointment filled a previously vacant seat.

Charlene Peterson from the New Jersey School Boards Association presented the district’s strategic plan, developed through a collaborative community process. Peterson emphasized the importance of community input in shaping the district’s goals. The strategic planning process involved several meetings where participants identified the district’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities. These discussions informed four key goal areas: “teaching and learning inspiring innovation,” “a culture of respect and well-being,” “future-focused facilities,” and “building community.”

The teaching and learning group aimed to inspire student engagement and achievement by increasing innovative learning opportunities, supporting staff through professional development, and utilizing data to address diverse learning needs. The culture of respect and well-being group focused on fostering a safe and respectful school community, with objectives such as peer mediation, mentoring programs, self-advocacy, and emotional well-being strategies.

Facility enhancement was another crucial area, with a focus on maintaining and upgrading infrastructure to ensure a modern and adaptable learning environment. Safety and security were emphasized as essential objectives. The community engagement group aimed to involve all stakeholders, advocating for streamlined communication and opportunities for external stakeholder involvement.

In addition to the strategic planning discussions, the meeting addressed other issues. A parent requested the addition of Eid to the school calendar, prompting thoughtful conversation among board members. The community relations committee reported on preparations for the upcoming Sterling Street Fair, emphasizing the importance of engaging the community through events.

The policy committee reviewed various policies, including those related to the New Jersey School Board’s wellness check. The student achievement and curriculum committee shared updates on the math program transition and noted a positive trend in student attendance following a winter of illness. They discussed the administration’s efforts to engage families through webinars and PTO meetings, as well as the CUSAC process and awaited state testing data.

The buildings and grounds committee reported on the review of a sustainable New Jersey grant application, ultimately deciding not to pursue it. They also highlighted the acquisition of breakfast carts through an equipment grant, which were successfully utilized during a recent stir-fry event.

Further updates included the commencement of spring grounds work to prepare fields for sports and a final assessment of the district’s windows, with quotes for additional screens pending. The installation of the Gillette Gaga pit received positive feedback from students. Water testing for lead was completed with all drinking outlets passing on the first draw.

The Long Hill Ed Foundation organized an upcoming color run event to foster community spirit and raise funds. The foundation’s year-end overview highlighted accomplishments such as sponsoring grants for school supplies, supporting flexible seating arrangements, and providing tuition assistance for after-school programs.

The superintendent’s report addressed upcoming academic assessments and confirmed the continuation of the summer institute program. The success of the middle school musical, “The Wizard of Oz,” was acknowledged, along with the recognition of Samantha Surreal as Central Middle School’s NJSBA unsung hero.

The finance committee discussed the breakfast program, deciding to apply for a waiver for the 2025-26 school year, delaying entry until 2026-27. They also reported a change in bus rental companies for athletic transportation, citing cost benefits and improved support.
