A council member raised questions about the department’s spending practices, including how vendor fees for Jackson Day were determined. The member suggested that previous fees were too low, considering the event’s visibility, and supported recent increases in vendor fees from $50 to $250. These financial decisions reflect an ongoing effort to ensure that community events are both financially viable and inclusive.

Plans for an expanded celebration include a variety of attractions, such as a new ATV dirt bike racetrack, a monster truck show, and potential appearances by a Blackhawk helicopter and the state police helicopter. The event aims to draw between 17,000 and 18,000 attendees, building on the previous year’s turnout of 11,000. This planning underscores the community’s dedication to making Jackson Day a hallmark event.

Financial considerations were also highlighted in the ordinance discussions. The council approved the first reading of a new ordinance that would amend the township’s administrative code to restrict cash payments for most transactions, with exceptions for specific offices like the tax collector’s office and municipal court. This move aims to streamline financial operations within the township.

In other discussions, infrastructure issues related to gas leaks in the South New Prospect area were brought to the council’s attention. A resident highlighted the ongoing problem of road repairs being disrupted by leaks, calling for better coordination and transparency from utility companies. Public safety concerns were also raised, particularly regarding the use of gas-powered bikes, with calls for stricter enforcement to prevent potential accidents.
