Another issue was the fairness of the existing tree ordinance, particularly the disparity in replacement costs between residential and commercial properties. The ordinance currently requires homeowners to pay a higher fee than commercial developers for tree removal without replacement. A participant emphasized the inequity, stating, “meanwhile the homeowners are being forced to pay more than a commercial developer if they cut down if they’re not going to replace a tree.” There was a consensus on the need to adjust the commercial fee from $350 to match the residential rate of $750. The commission expressed interest in presenting this issue at a future council workshop to advocate for the change.

Preparations for Greenfest, scheduled for May 4th, were also a focal point. The event aims to engage the community in environmental awareness, with a target of attracting at least 25 vendors, including conservation organizations and school groups. Concerns about vendor overlap, particularly regarding coffee sales, were discussed, with members agreeing to share a list of contacted vendors to streamline communications. The event is strategically timed with a 5K race to maximize participation, encouraging race attendees to visit Greenfest afterward.

The commission also addressed initiatives to reduce plastic waste, particularly the automatic inclusion of plastic utensils in takeout orders from local restaurants. Members noted that some establishments have begun asking customers if they need utensils, aligning with the commission’s goals. A proposal to include a recommendation on the town’s website encouraging residents to request utensils only when necessary was suggested as a strategy to minimize waste.

The ongoing plastic film recycling program was another topic of interest, with participants noting its success. The program, initially a pilot, will continue due to positive feedback. Members shared personal experiences and discussed challenges such as missed pickups and storage issues. Suggestions were made to demonstrate effective packing techniques for recycling bags to ensure program success.

The meeting also highlighted the commission’s recent achievement of Sustainable Jersey certification, which is valid for two years. This status is important for securing grants that support the commission’s environmental initiatives. Despite the certification, members expressed a commitment to further enhance their efforts to aim for a higher certification level in the future.
