St. Peter Council Approves School Resource Officer Agreement and Jefferson Square Land Sale
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the St. Peter City Council approved a two-year agreement with the local school district for a School Resource Officer (SRO) and authorized legal action to vacate and potentially sell land at Jefferson Square. These decisions aim to enhance community safety and optimize city resources.
The School Resource Officer agreement, a continuation of previous arrangements, will cover the 2025 to 2027 school years, maintaining the same financial terms while updating data access language to align with state law. The council’s decision follows multiple discussions with the school board and reflects ongoing cooperation between the city and the school district. The school board is expected to review this agreement in their upcoming meeting.
The resolution regarding Jefferson Square involves vacating the west 122 feet of the area, which has been largely unused since a water well plant was decommissioned in 2010. The city attorney explained that the land’s original public purpose is no longer viable, and the council agreed to pursue a legal route to sell the property. Proceeds from the sale could support the development of Gorman Park, providing a tangible public benefit. The council noted that developing the vacant land for housing would better serve public needs than leaving it as an idle lot.
Additionally, the council approved a purchase agreement for a vacant lot on South Washington Avenue with Alh Land Company and Fox Valley Property LLC. This development will consist of four twin homes. This move follows the decommissioning and demolition of a former water treatment plant on the site.
Lastly, the council approved a purchase agreement with Logger Construction for land on Klein Street in the North Industrial Park, intended for mini storage development. This project aims to meet the community’s growing storage needs and is expected to contribute to local property tax revenue and utility fees.
