In parallel with this, the council is preparing two grant applications for the upcoming meeting, including resolutions for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, which will cover road, pedestrian, and bikeway applications, in addition to the Local Transportation Projects Fund program.

The meeting also highlighted several ongoing construction projects. The Bayside bulkhead replacement project is progressing, with various street ends at different stages of completion. Base paving and concrete work are scheduled for completion by June 13th, after which cleanup efforts will prepare the area for fall remobilization. The reconstruction of Toledo Avenue has been substantially completed, with only final closeout items remaining. Additionally, the 2025 road resurfacing program has been executed, with minimal tasks left to finalize.

The council’s attention to infrastructure was further evident in their discussions on ordinance amendments, particularly concerning wireless communications facilities in the public right-of-way. An existing ordinance is set to be amended to incorporate updated insurance provisions based on risk management recommendations, with these changes to be introduced at the next council meeting on June 11th.

Community engagement featured prominently in the meeting, with public comments addressing concerns over commercial truck parking ordinances. A resident expressed apprehension about the rising presence of trucks used as everyday vehicles and the challenges in defining commercial vehicles. The council acknowledged these concerns and is reviewing the ordinance to address them. Additionally, the resident voiced concerns over borough spending, particularly regarding leased vehicles for beach services, to which the council clarified that leasing these vehicles is more cost-effective than outright purchases.

Further discussions highlighted the financial impact of beach box rentals, with the council confirming the existence of 297 boxes that generate approximately $285,000 in revenue, equivalent to over a penny on the tax rate. The council is considering the strategic addition of more boxes to the northern end of the beaches while avoiding overcrowding in the southern end.

The meeting also included reports on various municipal services. The police department responded to 1,556 calls for service in April, with 40 criminal investigations and eight adult arrests. Emergency medical services reported 57 calls for service, including CPR courses and mass casualty incident training. These updates reflect the borough’s dedication to maintaining public safety and enhancing community services.
