Middleborough School Committee Celebrates Student Talent and Sets Plans for Future Musical Endeavors
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Middleborough School Committee meeting showcased the remarkable talent of student musicians from John T. Nichols Junior Middle School, with performances that highlighted their dedication and artistry. Both the orchestra and band segments were met with applause, while plans for future musical opportunities were outlined, promising continued support and growth for the school’s music programs.
The meeting prominently featured the much-anticipated spring concert at John T. Nichols Junior Middle School, where the sixth-grade orchestra performed with notable passion and commitment. The orchestra’s performance began with “Fiddling to Boston,” a spirited rendition of the classic tune “Go to Boston,” which was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience. The orchestra proceeded with “Fable,” a piece described by its composer as depicting a fairy tale story with cartoon-like creatures. The performance included a playful moment where the audience was humorously instructed to cover their eyes before the seventh and eighth-grade orchestra joined in for a rendition of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
The eighth graders, who were approaching the end of their middle school journey, received special recognition for their adaptability and commitment over their three years in the program. Their final performance at the middle school marked an emotional milestone, as they prepared to transition to the high school orchestra. A notable mention was given to an orchestra member, Veto, who was commended for his hard work and dedication. The concert concluded with “Bohemian Stomp,” inviting audience participation and leaving a lasting impression.
Sebastian Glasby introduced an energetic programmatic piece with industrial sounds, and Alex Sheret brought nostalgia with the “Scooby-Doo” theme. The band concluded with the “Eerie Canal Song,” highlighting the importance of simple favorites alongside complex pieces. Each performance received significant applause.
The eighth-grade band, led by Jack Ulfoy, delivered a powerful rendition of the primary musical theme from the 1993 film Jurassic Park, composed by John Williams. The director humorously acknowledged the multifaceted responsibilities of parents juggling between sports, dance, orchestra, and band commitments.
Looking towards the future, the director announced exciting changes for the next school year, including a more frequent band practice schedule that would eliminate the need for practice cards. This new schedule aims to provide students with greater opportunities to develop their musical skills, with plans for new programs and a marching skills class for sixth graders. Additionally, there was a reminder for seventh and eighth graders to return their marching band uniforms, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for upcoming events.
The meeting also highlighted the spring chorus concert, where the combined choirs of grades 5 through 12 performed “Time After Time” by Sydney Loer. This performance was a meaningful moment for the eighth graders as they concluded their time in junior middle school. The choir also performed “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers, fostering audience participation and spreading optimism. The concert concluded with acknowledgments to the eighth-grade choir members for their contributions over the years, recognizing the growth of the choir and the support from the music program’s leaders.
