Denville School Board Discusses Grant for School Safety Upgrades and Curriculum Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
The Denville School Board meeting focused on multiple topics, including a grant application for school safety enhancements, personnel and instructional program resolutions, and the financial implications of out-of-district placements. Discussions also covered maintenance expenditures for school facilities and upcoming board goals.
Central to the meeting was the discussion of a grant application aimed at upgrading the district’s school safety measures. The business administrator explained that the application, submitted in collaboration with the Denville police department, sought $239,000 from the school violence prevention program. This funding, if awarded, would replace the current transportation radio fleet and support the hiring of part-time technology personnel to implement the upgrades. The application was submitted just before its due date, and the district anticipates a decision by early September.
In addition to safety measures, the board examined personnel resolutions due to an absent member. These resolutions addressed various staffing needs, including sick day payouts, pre-K and new student orientation assistance, and summer work assignments. One notable highlight was the recognition of Valley View as a National School of Character for 2025. The board unanimously approved replacements for instructional roles, a school secretary, and a bus driver for the upcoming school year.
Instructional and program resolutions also took center stage. The board deliberated on workshops and expenses for a summer writing institute and an annual technology conference. A significant decision involved adopting a six-year contract for an updated middle school health text program. Additionally, the board discussed replacing the current lesson planner with Rubicon Atlas, a decision that stirred concern due to the substantial cost increase from $1,200 to $9,000 annually. However, it was clarified that Rubicon Atlas would serve a dual purpose as both a lesson planner and a curriculum repository.
Financial concerns were also prevalent as the board addressed the costs related to out-of-district placements. An extraordinary aid application is submitted annually to the state, detailing these costs, which must exceed specific amounts to qualify for reimbursement. The board was informed that out-of-district placements over $55,000 and in-district placements above $40,000 might yield partial reimbursements, with the previous year’s rate at 90%. This reimbursement only applies to costs exceeding the threshold rather than the total expenses.
Operational matters included the approval of transportation contracts for the 2025-2026 school year. The board was also tasked with submitting anticipated facility requests to the Morris County Superintendent of Schools, with no changes in use or dual-use applications expected. Maintenance expenditures were highlighted with requests for essential repairs, such as water meter replacements at Lake View and Malibu schools and a preventive maintenance agreement for the Valley View Middle School elevator. A notable project under the school violence prevention program involved radio communication upgrades, window shades for middle schools, and an access control system, requiring a local cost share.
The board also approved a paving project at Lake View and Revenue schools, totaling $240,890, funded through capital reserve. A review of these items elicited no further discussion from members.
As the meeting progressed, committee reports and correspondence updates were provided. It was noted that only one board meeting would occur in July and August, combining a working session with a regular session. Discussions on district and board goals were planned for the upcoming month, with a proposed new board goal to establish a more effective process for developing goals. Concerns were raised about the wording of a specific goal related to auditing special services program costs.
