Becker City Council Approves Becker Food Shelf’s $1 Land Purchase Amidst Increasing Demand
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Becker City Council addressed several issues, including a notable decision to sell a city-owned lot to the Becker Food Shelf for $1, a move designed to meet the growing demand for food assistance in the area. The council also discussed police department staffing, digital fingerprinting services, and a local government roundtable aimed at improving communication among various entities in the city.
The Becker Food Shelf took center stage as Pastor Dave, representing the organization, presented a proposal to purchase a city-owned lot behind the old fire hall for $1. The proposal stemmed from an urgent need for a larger, permanent facility to accommodate the substantial increase in clientele following the Food Shelf’s relocation from City Hall. With 2,025 new clients served this year alone, the demand for services has highlighted the inadequacy of the current facilities. The council unanimously approved Resolution 25-49, which includes a clawback provision. If a building permit is not obtained by June 1, 2026, or a certificate of occupancy by June 1, 2027, the property will revert to the city. An amendment introduced during the meeting added a right of first refusal clause.
The council’s decision was informed by concerns raised about the original purchase agreement, including an incorrect repurchase price of $435,600, which was removed. The discussion also confirmed that necessary utilities were already in place on the lot, paving the way for a smooth transition to the new facility. Pastor Dave expressed gratitude for the council’s support and emphasized the importance of this acquisition in addressing the community’s needs.
Another topic was the staffing changes in the police department, following the promotion of Chris Limon to police chief. This left a vacancy in the lieutenant position, prompting discussions on whether to hire a new lieutenant or promote an existing sergeant. While no firm decision was reached, the council agreed to postpone filling the position.
The council also considered transitioning the police department to digital fingerprinting services. The current reliance on traditional ink methods was recognized as outdated, and the proposed digital system aims to enhance efficiency in scenarios such as arrests, adoptions, handgun purchases, and volunteer background checks.
In addition, the meeting included a discussion on a local government roundtable intended to improve communication among city staff, elected officials, the township, and the school board. The roundtable, scheduled for July 29th at 5:00 PM, aims to foster collaboration, particularly concerning local school financing and its potential impact on the city’s bond rating. The council approved a motion to set the meeting as a special session.
The council also reviewed updates on the police department’s city hall project, with the building expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of the following week. Progress included removing the perimeter fence, scheduled cleaning, and the arrival of new furniture.
The meeting touched on other topics, such as the annual League of Minnesota Cities conference, where council members expressed mixed reviews about the sessions attended, particularly the cannabis update session. Furthermore, discussions highlighted the absence of the governor from the conference and noted a video message from a representative as a substitute.
In routine matters, the consent agenda was approved, encompassing a hiring and termination report, a joint powers agreement for a breath testing machine, an appraisal report acceptance for a city-owned industrial lot, and two temporary liquor license approvals for the Becker Lions Club. The council also approved partial pay requests for street improvement projects and recognized city staff anniversaries.
