Gardner City Council Approves Zoning Change to Facilitate Industrial Expansion
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Gardner City Council discussed and approved a zoning amendment to facilitate business expansion, addressed a range of community projects, and tabled a proposal for a new senior center program pending further review.
A focus of the meeting was the joint public hearing on the proposed amendment to Chapter 675 of the city’s zoning code. The change aimed to rezone a parcel on the easterly side of MA 101 from Commercial 2 to Industrial 1 with a Summit Solar overlay. The company, specializing in high-end woodworking for commercial and industrial applications, plans to utilize the adjacent 6.13-acre parcel to increase its footprint and, potentially, its workforce. The proposal was presented by attorney Christine Tree, who highlighted the economic benefits of the expansion, including increased development opportunities and job creation.
Tree addressed potential concerns about the impact on neighboring properties, assuring the council that the expansion would not disrupt adjacent land use due to the surrounding undeveloped land. The adjustment was seen as a strategic move to enhance economic opportunities while leveraging existing infrastructure. No opposition was voiced during the public hearing, and the meeting concluded with a unanimous decision to adjourn.
Another discussion revolved around the condition of a building previously occupied by the school department. Council members expressed concerns about the state of the building and the need for action to prevent deterioration. The issue of surplus furniture and materials left by the school department was raised, with suggestions made for redistribution to other city departments. Following these discussions, a resolution related to the building was authorized without opposition.
The council also considered a proposal to increase the spending limit for the Council on Aging Recreational Activities revolving account to $60,000, a move supported by the finance committee and passed unanimously. There was further discussion on creating a new revolving account for lifeline service activities managed by the Gardner Senior Center, with a proposed limit of $20,000. However, the council decided to table this item, citing the need for more information on the program’s implementation and sustainability. Concerns were raised about the training of volunteers installing medical alert equipment and the program’s financial feasibility, given its previous operator, Heywood Hospital, found it unsustainable.
In addition to these discussions, the Economic and Community Development Committee provided updates on various projects. The Rear Main Street project received a grant extension to continue work until mid-2026, with ongoing site preparation and landscaping planned. The Greenwood Pool project faced initial delays due to a bid protest but is now scheduled for demolition and subsequent renovation. The North Central Pathway project was nearing completion, and the former Rome building’s demolition had concluded, with the site awaiting state approval for sale to a developer. Staffing changes within the department were noted, including the hiring of an assistant director.
Further community engagement was encouraged through a pilot program to open Greenwood Pool on Sundays, contingent on community response. The council member emphasized the pool’s availability during hot weather, urging residents to take advantage.
