MACCRAY School Board Explores Therapy Dog Program to Support Student Mental Health
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the MACCRAY School Board delved into the potential benefits of implementing a therapy dog program to support student mental health, among other topics. The board considered a presentation on the use of therapy dogs in educational settings, a discussion on facility improvements, and updates on staffing and finances.
The primary focus of the meeting revolved around a presentation detailing a mental health initiative involving therapy dogs. The initiative aims to create safe spaces for students and staff to address emotional needs, with therapy dogs playing a role. The speaker outlined a pilot program that would introduce a therapy dog on-site four days a week, with minimal costs involved, specifically around $300 for insurance. The program is designed to operate in collaboration with a nonprofit organization focused on mental health.
The speaker shared compelling statistics about mental health, noting that one in five adults in the U.S. will be diagnosed with a mental health issue this year, and 46% of those diagnoses occur by age 14. A personal narrative was shared about the speaker’s son and the transformative impact a therapy dog had on their family life. The speaker emphasized that therapy dogs in schools help students engage and open up about their struggles by providing nonjudgmental support.
A video was shown, featuring testimonials from students who had benefited from the program. One student expressed that the therapy dog helped them cope with anxiety and depression, reducing feelings of isolation. A member of the board inquired about the facilitation of conversations during sessions, to which the speaker responded that a licensed therapist or school counselor is always present to provide support. The program’s structure allows for small group sessions facilitated by the therapy dog, a social worker, or a school counselor.
The program’s success stories were shared, including the expansion of therapy dog teams to 42 schools in the first year. An invitation for further engagement and sharing of materials related to the program concluded the presentation.
The board further discussed the operational aspects of integrating therapy dogs in schools. They considered the certification and training required for therapy dogs, affirming that such animals must pass rigorous tests to handle various stimuli, such as loud noises or fire alarms. Strategies were suggested for introducing therapy dogs gradually, especially for students who may be fearful of dogs.
The conversation briefly shifted to the employment status of the staff member responsible for the therapy dogs, referred to as Sue. Although previously considered a volunteer, it was clarified that she is compensated for her role. There was discussion about adjusting her job description and compensation due to increased responsibilities, with hopes that the pilot program would provide data to inform future decisions.
In addition to the therapy dog initiative, the board reviewed other district matters. Staffing updates revealed the district is fully staffed for the upcoming school year, and maintenance issues at the athletic complex were being addressed. The financial health of the district was also examined, highlighting a favorable bond rating and positive student engagement in the fitness center.
