Woodbridge Township Council Approves Key Bond Ordinance for Sewaren Waterfront Preservation
- Meeting Overview:
The Woodbridge Township Council recently convened to discuss various community initiatives, including a bond ordinance for the acquisition of properties in Sewaren aimed at preserving the waterfront. The meeting also featured student presentations on anti-vaping efforts and discussions on local infrastructure projects.
The council approved a bond ordinance authorizing the acquisition of properties in Sewaren for $1,300,000. The Vice President of the Council expressed gratitude for the support of the ordinance, emphasizing its importance in preserving the Sewaren waterfront. The council is focusing on maintaining open space for residents and is committed to preventing potential development in the area, which includes plans for a waterfront walkway, a dog park, and a pedestrian bridge. Community opposition to development has been voiced, with residents favoring the preservation of scenic areas near the marina and boat launch.
During the public comment section, a local resident, Ken Gardner, raised concerns about the properties involved in the $600,000 expenditure. He expressed relief that the land would be preserved rather than developed into apartments, describing the area as unsuitable for development. Gardner highlighted the scenic value of the vacant lots near the marina, and the dialogue included inquiries about building restrictions due to their proximity to a waterway. The council reassured the public of their intent to keep the area undeveloped.
The meeting also celebrated the creativity and awareness efforts of local students through an anti-vaping poster contest. The Mayor and the head of the youth services division acknowledged the students’ contributions to a campaign aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of vaping. The contest invited submissions from middle and high school students, with winning designs replicated and distributed across the township. Each student presented their work, explaining the messages behind their posters.
One student, Samantha Megaletta, from Masonic School, created a comedic film as a public service announcement, while Side Cara Canyon from Lafayette State School designed a cartoon drawing featuring a grim reaper with the message, “vaping is as safe as skydiving without a parachute.” Kenisha Patel from MLB Street School emphasized the theme, “vaping is temporary. Life is forever,” in her artwork, highlighting health risks such as being banned from sports teams. Other students also shared their creative endeavors.
The council also addressed various ordinances and resolutions. A motion was approved unanimously for several items, including amendments to traffic regulations and land use ordinances. The council authorized the sale of property on Rawway Avenue through public auction, with no public comments received during the hearings. Additionally, the council discussed infrastructure improvements, such as a road extension on Omar Avenue to connect with an industrial area, intended to alleviate traffic on Rawway Avenue and direct trucks away from residential neighborhoods.
The public comment portion of the meeting included inquiries about the financial implications of an elementary school project in Hope. A resident sought clarity on the pilot funding mechanism, which bypasses voter approval and eliminates the need for taxpayer contributions. The council reassured the public that the project costs would be covered over a 30-year period through pilot funding from the Metro Park project.
The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming community events, including musical performances, plays, and a community appreciation event organized by the American Irish Association in partnership with the ALS Group. The Council Vice President and other members highlighted local initiatives, such as library programs, road safety improvements, and cultural events.
