Historic Tarpon Springs Home’s Roof Replacement Moves Forward with Board Approval
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent meeting of the Tarpon Springs Heritage Preservation Board, the board approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for replacing the asbestos roof of a historic home with asphalt shingles. The house, a contributing Victorian structure located on West Orange Street, is believed to have been built between 1901 and 1902 by Ernest Mears, a founding member of Tarpon Springs and a prominent sponge broker. The structure was later inherited by his daughter, Ernestine, and her husband, Colonel Salih, a civil engineer influential in the town’s development.
The board’s decision was guided by the need to maintain the historical integrity of the property while accommodating necessary updates. The existing asbestos shingles, not the original roofing material, will be replaced with asphalt shingles, which are consistent with the architectural style of other folk Victorian homes in the area. The board discussed the potential impact of the texture change on the street view and noted that the existing roof is not original to the house. The board recommended that the applicant consider using brown shingles to better mimic the original appearance, although this suggestion is not a condition of approval.
The approval comes with conditions that the historic roof line must be maintained, no changes can be made to the chimneys, and the certificate will expire in three years if a building permit is not issued.
