Doral City Council Debates Parental Leave Policy, Approves Farmers Market Initiative
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Doral City Council meeting, held on August 13, 2025, discussions took place regarding Vice Mayor Poras’s request for maternity leave and several community-focused initiatives, including the establishment of a seasonal farmers market.
A central focus of the meeting was Vice Mayor Poras’s request for an extended leave of absence due to her upcoming maternity leave. Poras sought approval for excused absences spanning several months, citing the need for family support and proposing virtual participation in council meetings during this period. However, the request met with mixed reactions from other council members, who raised concerns about setting a precedent that could affect the governance of the city.
Councilwoman Reynoso expressed apprehension about the disparity between the Vice Mayor’s request and the parental leave policy available to city employees, which offers only four weeks of paid leave. Councilwoman Cabral questioned the necessity of physical presence in decision-making, arguing that virtual participation could suffice. Despite these differing viewpoints, the council ultimately agreed to grant Poras a single pre-approved absence, leaving other requests to be considered on an individual basis.
Another topic was the proposal to establish a seasonal farmers market in Doral, presented by Councilwoman Reynoso. The initiative aims to boost the local economy by providing small businesses with direct access to customers and creating a vibrant community space. Reynoso expressed enthusiasm for revitalizing the city’s market scene, envisioning a venue that would also feature local musicians and cultural performances. Councilman Pinedo supported the initiative, recalling past markets that successfully engaged the community. The council unanimously approved the proposal, tasking the parks and recreation director with exploring best practices for organizing the market.
The council also discussed a resolution concerning micro-mobility ordinances, which would regulate devices like electric bicycles and scooters. The proposed ordinance aligns with recent Florida state legislation, granting local governments the authority to enforce safety measures, such as age and identification requirements for riders. Councilman Pinato highlighted the growing popularity of these devices and the accompanying safety concerns, proposing fines for violations like missing safety equipment and reckless riding. The council unanimously passed the motion to have the city attorney draft the ordinance for future consideration.
During the meeting, the council recognized Pharmasi US with the “Keep Doral Beautiful Business Award” for its efforts to maintain and enhance its property. Edgar Distra, the co-compliance director, commended the business for its contributions to revitalizing the area.
In other business, the council addressed a resolution supporting HR 4393, the Dignity Act of 2025, which focuses on immigration reform. The resolution garnered widespread support, with council members highlighting its balanced approach to securing borders and providing legal pathways for undocumented immigrants. Councilman Pinedo proposed an amendment to include additional congressional support, and the motion passed with majority approval.
The meeting also included updates on various city matters, such as the acquisition of new trolleys and challenges related to Lake Drive’s municipal services. Discussions underscored the need for cooperation with local management associations to facilitate improvements. The meeting concluded with a motion to recess until the afternoon budget workshop.
