Mounds View School Board Approves Ambitious 2025-2026 District Operational Plan
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Mounds View School Board unanimously approved an ambitious operational plan for the 2025-2026 school year, which includes priority goals such as expanding career pathways for high school students and developing outdoor learning classrooms. The meeting also covered updates on summer school programs and anticipated enrollment increases for the upcoming academic year.
The highlight of the Mounds View School Board meeting was the approval of the 2025-2026 district operational plan. Superintendent Chris Lennox presented the plan, emphasizing extensive review by both administration and board members. The plan outlines eight strategic goals, with three marked as priorities. These priorities include the expansion of career pathway opportunities for high school students, the development of a plan for outdoor learning classrooms, and the expansion of the student information system in assessment and analysis. Additional goals focus on strengthening the onboarding process for employees, supporting a capital projects technology levy campaign, completing contract negotiations, updating enrollment and facility studies, and conducting a district-wide energy audit. The board members expressed support for these initiatives, which were approved unanimously.
Another topic discussed was the enrollment update for the 2025-2026 school year. The executive director of school management reported an increase in enrollment projections from January, with a notable rise of approximately 80 students at Snail Lake Education Center and additional increases at Turtle Lake and Island Lake schools. The district’s total enrollment was projected at 11,445, surpassing the January projection by 317 students.
Readiness for the new school year was also addressed, highlighting ongoing summer projects and staffing updates. Efforts to fill remaining licensed and unlicensed positions, particularly in nutrition services and para-educator roles, were mentioned. Various remodeling and maintenance projects across schools were completed over the summer, including new flooring, painting, and updates to cafeterias and classrooms. Noteworthy projects included a geothermal installation at High View Middle School, enhancements at Irondale High School, and the relocation of the coffee shop at Mounds View High School. Appreciation was expressed for the dedication of custodians, maintenance crews, and the transportation department in preparing the district for the students’ return on September 2nd.
The meeting also provided insights into the district’s summer programming efforts. The executive director of curriculum and instruction, along with other team members, presented updates on summer programs. The program served over 550 elementary students, with an increase in participation from Mounds View employees.
Middle school participation in summer programming increased, emphasizing the importance of relationship building among staff and students. Secondary summer programming maintained similar participation levels to the previous year, with five students graduating, primarily from the area learning center. The need for early identification of students requiring summer support and retaining high school teachers for summer programs was underscored.
The meeting also covered the extensive range of summer programs offered through the Silverview Education Center, including English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, technology career pathway courses, and GED preparation. A notable aspect of the adult education initiative was the introduction of high-quality daycare services, facilitating class attendance for parents. Community enrichment programs, including community lunches in collaboration with the city of New Brighton, were also highlighted. These lunches reached capacity, reflecting strong community engagement and demand for such services.
Teacher development was another focal point of the meeting. A new teacher orientation welcomed 57 educators to the district, including those in early childhood and special education. The orientation included district overviews and support from the Mountains View Education Association. Summer also provided opportunities for teachers to participate in professional learning communities, reflecting on the previous academic year and preparing for the upcoming one. Curriculum development was a key focus, with teachers submitting proposals for compensation for their work on a middle school redesign initiative and updates to subject areas, including new standards in mathematics and an ethnic studies strand in the U.S. history curriculum.
In a nod to student engagement, the meeting highlighted the presence of the student activist group, Good Trouble, known for its involvement in community initiatives. Additionally, the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation promoted its upcoming Rock the Schoolhouse event, with ticket sales underway. Community members were reminded to be vigilant for children walking to and from school and for school buses as the academic year commenced.
