Taunton School Committee Secures $700,000 Grant for Literacy Program Amid Renovation Updates
- Meeting Overview:
The Taunton School Committee meeting highlighted the approval of a $700,000 grant for a literacy program and updates on ongoing renovations at the Hamilton Street facility. Discussions spanned from financial obligations and curriculum revisions to community engagement and collective bargaining agreements.
During the meeting, Superintendent John J. Cabral announced the receipt of a $700,000 competitive grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This funding will support the implementation of a high dosage literacy program called Ignite, targeting first-grade students across all elementary schools in the district. The program’s goal is to enhance reading skills, with expectations of improving reading levels by one or two grades. The initiative will involve one-on-one literacy tutoring for 266 eligible students and includes a $2,500 licensing fee. Cabral praised the efforts of staff members who contributed to securing this grant and expressed enthusiasm about potentially expanding the program to additional grades in the future.
In tandem with financial discussions, the committee provided an extensive update on the renovations at the Hamilton Street facility, formerly Coil Cassidy Middle and High School. The project, which includes a new roof, HVAC and ventilation upgrades, high-efficiency boilers, brick repointing, and ADA-compliant features, is progressing with an expected completion date of June 30, 2026. A committee member emphasized the importance of ensuring the building’s readiness and safety for students and staff before occupancy. The facility’s updates aim to modernize the school infrastructure.
The committee also addressed financial matters, approving bills payable for fiscal years 2025 and 2026, amounting to over $975,000. These included payments for professional development, technology supplies, and various school services. Notably, $339,950 was allocated for new computers and monitors from Wall-E Computer, necessitated by a network outage in the previous academic year. The committee emphasized transparency and accountability in managing the district’s financial obligations, with members expressing a desire to close accounts timely and in adherence to city guidelines.
In other business, the district’s curriculum revision process was discussed, particularly the approval of a $96,849 expenditure for a new visual arts program in collaboration with the Art of Education University. This curriculum, covering grades K through 12, was finalized after being pulled from a previous warrant for further discussion. The program is set to run for six years.
The meeting also highlighted community engagement efforts, including a successful summer program that served 307 students through academic and enrichment activities. Positive feedback from students and parents underscored the program’s impact, with a card presented to the committee as a token of appreciation. Additionally, the committee discussed the Boys and Girls Club’s 21st Century Community Learning Center program, emphasizing the importance of advocating for federal funding to sustain services for at-risk middle school youth. A motion was passed to invite representatives from the Boys and Girls Club for a future presentation to raise awareness of their program.
Celebrating local achievements, the committee recognized the boys’ volleyball team for reaching the Elite 8 in their regional competition and securing their first Hakamak League championship. The team’s dedication and success were applauded, with a coach highlighting key players’ contributions. A light-hearted suggestion for a volleyball match between the committee and the team was met with enthusiasm, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
Collective bargaining was another focal point, with the committee reporting a tentative agreement with the Taunton Teachers Association (TTA) following extensive meetings over the summer. The agreement is set for ratification on August 25th, with optimism expressed about the positive outcome. The atmosphere was described as congenial, with members displaying gestures of camaraderie following the negotiation process.
The meeting wrapped up with acknowledgments of a scoreboard dedication ceremony in honor of David Lurri and discussions on naming requests for school facilities. Proposals to name the Martin playground after former superintendent Donald Clary and the Taunton High School presentation room after Joseph H. Martin were unanimously approved, with plans for a joint dedication ceremony in September. An update on the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at athletic fields was also provided, addressing legal inquiries and practical solutions for usage by external leagues.
