West Windsor-Plainsboro Board Tackles Traffic, Curriculum, and Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The West Windsor-Plainsboro School Board meeting addressed significant traffic concerns related to road closures near High School North, showcased curriculum advancements, and highlighted community initiatives aimed at improving safety and accessibility.
The meeting began with a focus on a pressing community issue: the anticipated traffic disruptions due to road closures on Millstone Road between Cranberry Road and Maple Avenue. This closure is expected to last six months and poses a challenge for families commuting to High School North. The board urged families to utilize district-provided bus services to alleviate congestion, especially during the initial days of school. A potential installation of a temporary traffic light at Cranberry Road is being considered to manage the traffic flow more effectively.
Parallel to traffic concerns, the board emphasized a need for enhanced bike education in response to a noted lack of biking knowledge among middle and high school students. Many students reportedly do not know the correct side of the road to bike on, aligning with traffic rules for drivers. The West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance, alongside the Greater Mercer Transportation Management Association, was proposed as a resource to provide necessary bike safety education across various grade levels. The ongoing bridge replacement project between West Windsor and Plainsboro, expected to create traffic challenges, was also discussed. However, the addition of sidewalks on both sides of the bridge was viewed positively as it aligns with the district’s vision for improved accessibility, encouraging walking and biking to school.
On the academic front, Dr. Barbara Gould, the chief academic officer, presented an overview of the curriculum department’s recent work. Over the summer, 247 curricular documents were written or revised, including 27 new courses and 220 updates to existing curricula. A notable addition to the curriculum was an Asian-American course, which had its first summer session. This course aims to foster diversity and solidarity, as reflected in a testimonial by a student, Debbie Desapati. “Think Like a Researcher” was another topic of discussioned course, designed to teach students critical thinking and how to evaluate sources beyond mere internet searches.
Dr. Gould emphasized the comprehensive review process each new curriculum undergoes, with an equity lens to ensure inclusivity. This process includes essential components like summaries, pacing guides, objectives, assessments, and a newly included equity statement. She acknowledged the extensive efforts of educators, supervisors, and administrators in developing these curricula, thanking the board for its support in providing diverse educational opportunities.
During public comments, Ann Clifton from the West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance congratulated the district and schools for achieving safe routes to school designations from New Jersey. She expressed hope that more schools would participate in the program, aiming for gold status, and offered the alliance’s support. Clifton also mentioned the alliance’s use of a bike safety wheel at various school events to educate children and adults on safety related to biking, walking, and interactions with cyclists and pedestrians.
The board also heard reports from various committees. The Administration and Facilities Committee reviewed several policies and regulations to align with New Jersey state code, including a newly mandated suntan policy allowing students to use sunscreen without a physician’s documentation. The Curriculum Committee discussed the Spring 2025 NJ GPA results, approvals for new and revised curricula, and upcoming field trips. The Finance Committee noted that no major accounts were over budget and provided updates on energy-saving projects and summer facility upgrades.
