The adaptive assessment model will be piloted from October 27 to November 14, a tight timeline that has left educators scrambling to prepare students. This pilot test’s results will not factor into accountability measures, yet the necessity of readying students for two different assessments in a short period has caused frustration. The board discussed the historical context of state testing, tracing changes from the No Child Left Behind Act to the current computer-based formats, and expressed skepticism about the rushed implementation and decision-making by the state.

Further discussions at the meeting highlighted various initiatives and improvements within the district. The school district has made strides in facility upgrades and educational enhancements over the summer. New basketball and pickleball installations, along with significant roofing work at the high school, were completed. The fieldhouse roof was entirely replaced, and the high school auditorium roof was repaired, allowing the balcony to reopen after being closed due to leaks. Additionally, restroom fixtures across the high school were updated, and a new industrial arts classroom was established, introducing electives like residential construction.

Roosevelt School saw repairs to its stucco wall, and Washington School received an electrical upgrade for its gym to accommodate air conditioning. Furniture upgrades were initiated, providing new furniture for second-grade classes and many kindergarten classrooms, with plans to expand this effort in coming years. Technology initiatives have also been prioritized, with new Chromebooks distributed to students in grades three through five and freshmen. A technology cycle ensures that students retain their devices through middle and high school. Over 100 smartboards have been ordered to update classroom technology district-wide.

The board also reviewed state assessment results, focusing on the ACCESS for ELLs test for multilingual learners. The district reported an increase in multilingual learners, with numbers rising from approximately 64-65 students five years ago to 130 this year. The district’s efforts have resulted in ten students achieving a proficiency score of 4.5 or higher, allowing them to exit the ESL program. The addition of an ESL teacher for K-2 grades and the introduction of a translating device, Pocket Talk, were noted as part of the district’s response to growing multilingual needs.

Recognizing student achievements was another significant part of the meeting. Middle school students received awards for their performance in the national Spanish exam, while others were recognized for art scholarships and a spelling bee championship. A historical first was marked by a student receiving a National Junior Honor Society outstanding achievement award.

Professional development initiatives have also been a focus, aimed at improving instructional methods through data analysis and collaboration. An NGPA boot camp during lunch periods was introduced to prepare students for assessments. In English classes, teachers developed tasks to mirror state assessment questions, and strategies to alleviate test anxiety were emphasized. Changes in the high school math course structure were implemented to provide consistency in instruction.
