North Brunswick School Board Explores Language Proficiency Gains and Prepares for New Academic Year
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the North Brunswick Township Board of Education centered its discussions on the progress of multilingual learners, preparations for the upcoming school year, and the district’s efforts to support students facing language barriers. Key presentations and updates highlighted significant achievements in English language proficiency among students and the ongoing initiatives to enhance educational opportunities.
A prominent focus of the meeting was the presentation of the ACCESS for ELLs assessment results by the district’s ESL staff. This assessment, which evaluates English language proficiency, showed encouraging results across various grade levels. The ESL supervisor detailed these outcomes, noting substantial growth in language proficiency among students. Noteworthy progress was observed from kindergarten through high school, with a marked reduction in students at the lowest proficiency levels and a shift towards higher stages of language development.
For instance, in the transition from kindergarten to first grade, the percentage of students classified as entering or emerging decreased by 8%, signaling the success of foundational literacy supports. Similarly, from second to third grade, there was an 11% reduction in students at the earliest levels, with a corresponding increase in those at developing and expanding stages. These trends were attributed to effective instructional strategies and the dedication of ESL staff.
As students progressed through higher grades, the assessment’s rigor increased, but gains were still evident. By the end of elementary school, nearly 40% of students were nearing readiness to exit ESL services. In high school, despite the challenges posed by newcomers with limited English skills, there were improvements across proficiency levels, with many students equipped to engage in grade-level learning.
The meeting also addressed the instructional differentiation for multilingual students. The bilingual classroom primarily serves Spanish speakers, but there was discussion about the need for resources in other languages, such as Hindi and Arabic. Bilingual teachers use scaffolding techniques to support diverse proficiency levels.
In addition to language instruction, the board discussed ongoing collaborations with institutions like The College of New Jersey to provide bilingual certification training for teachers.
Data analysis was another key topic, with the introduction of data teams for ESL teachers. These teams hold quarterly meetings to review assessment data and develop targeted plans for improvement. This collaborative approach aims to align instructional strategies across ESL and general education teachers.
The superintendent’s report highlighted preparations for the new school year, emphasizing safety and readiness. The successful passage of a referendum funded essential upgrades to school facilities, including restroom renovations. The superintendent thanked the board and staff for their efforts and collaboration in achieving these improvements.
The board also discussed logistical concerns for the school year’s start, scheduled for September 2, urging parents to arrive early at bus stops to ensure smooth transportation. The superintendent addressed scheduling changes in the sports season due to a shortage of officials, with games moved to Thursdays.
During the public session, the president of the North Brunswick Township Education Association expressed gratitude for the tours of the schools and readiness of staff. Initiatives to engage parents and community members were highlighted, including a “meet the candidates” night for the upcoming board election.
