New Milford School Board Eyes New PE Options and Transportation Reforms
- Meeting Overview:
The New Milford School Board meeting highlighted efforts to diversify physical education options, address transportation challenges, and introduce new educational programs. The board discussed initiatives aimed at enhancing the academic and extracurricular experiences of students, alongside operational adjustments in response to community needs.
A primary focus of the meeting was the introduction of a new plan for physical education (PE) options, allowing students to opt for alternatives to traditional PE classes. This initiative, crafted with input from various contributors, proposes stricter guidelines to accommodate students engaged in demanding academic pursuits, such as multiple Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The intent is to balance rigorous academic commitments with participation in extracurricular activities, particularly for juniors and seniors, who are deemed to have earned this privilege through demonstrated responsibility and commitment. The board clarified that this program is not designed for students seeking leisure time during school hours. Freshmen and sophomores are still required to attend traditional PE classes to fulfill their graduation requirements.
Transportation issues were another major topic. A proposal was made to dissolve three inactive ad hoc committees and establish a new one focused on transportation. This was suggested due to ongoing challenges in organizing efficient bus routes and addressing delays, particularly for specialized student populations. A recent bus inspection revealed that all but one bus passed, highlighting the need for continued oversight. The board acknowledged the complaints from parents regarding transportation delays and behavioral issues on buses, emphasizing the need for improved coordination.
The discussion also touched on the potential for cost-saving and efficient transportation solutions, with a speaker underscoring the importance of board involvement in these decisions. A committee dedicated to transportation would aim to address these issues and explore viable solutions.
Additionally, the Superintendent’s report included an update on graduation pathways, noting that 153 students graduated the previous year with various methods to fulfill requirements. Importantly, no students were denied graduation for failing to meet these requirements. The report also addressed the retirement of Coach Hartney from his coaching duties after over 30 years, though he will continue as a substitute teacher and lead a new program to streamline substitute services, potentially saving the district significant funds.
The board discussed travel advisory ratings, currently at level two, and the necessity of informing parents about the possibility of cancellation and refunds if the advisory level increased.
Assistant Superintendent Lauren Gospa presented upcoming agenda items, including the district’s professional development and mentoring plans, aimed at addressing identified needs and setting measurable goals. Two new courses, Heritage Spanish 1 and Intro to Music Theory, are set to be approved, broadening the curriculum to cater to student interests and prior knowledge.
The board also addressed the transition to a new lunch service model for elementary schools, where pre-orders will no longer be required for grades one through five. Parents were informed of these changes, which aim to streamline meal service and reduce customization at the elementary level.
Traffic concerns around the school, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times, were noted. While the board acknowledged that traffic management falls outside its jurisdiction, suggestions were made to collaborate with local law enforcement to explore improvements, especially given ongoing construction contributing to congestion.
