Mayer Parks Commission Weighs Expanding Disc Golf Tournament Amid Feedback on Course Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Mayer Parks and Recreation Commission focused on expanding a successful disc golf tournament, addressing community event logistics, and planning future activities. The commission considered increasing the participant cap for future disc golf tournaments following impressive turnout and participant feedback regarding course conditions.
The disc golf tournament emerged as a focal point of the meeting, with 72 or 73 of the 75 spots filled. The tournament, which ran from 10 AM to noon, saw continued activities until 1:30 PM despite adverse weather affecting the subsequent open house event. One key outcome was the decision to donate 35 leftover discs to Mayor Lutheran. Discussions on integrating the tournament into the annual Mayor Rising Community Festival were positive. Participants suggested increasing the registration cap to 100 players, given the interest and capacity to accommodate more.
Feedback from tournament participants highlighted several areas for improvement. The most concern was the uneven tee boxes, which created tripping hazards. The commission recognized this as an issue needing prompt attention. Improved signage for out-of-bounds areas, particularly on hole 12 along Highway 25, was suggested, with painted stakes recommended to clarify boundaries. Another consideration was the addition of more trash cans on the course. Currently, only one was available, leading to suggestions for increasing this number to four to better match amenities found at other courses and enhance player convenience.
The course’s overall rating increased slightly from 3.6 to 3.7, though amenities lagged with a score of 2.1. Discussions expanded to encompass amenities beyond basic facilities, considering obstacles and challenges as enhancements to the player experience. Comparisons to other courses with diverse obstacles were made.
In addition to the disc golf discussions, the commission tackled the upcoming Christmas tree lighting event, tentatively set for December 7th. Coordination with the fire department is underway to confirm Santa’s arrival, following last year’s schedule. The chamber choir’s performance, set to occur from 4:45 to 5:15 PM, will precede the tree lighting ceremony. Logistics for food and beverage services, expected to be provided by the Lions Club, were also discussed. Santa and Mrs. Claus’s participation was humorously referenced, with some members showing enthusiasm for dressing up, mentioning an “elf” costume.
Preparation for the Christmas lights decorating competition was another topic of discussion. Early communication about the event was deemed essential, with a suggested entry deadline of December 5th to allow participants time for elaborate displays. The previous year’s gift card prizes were well-received, encouraging their continued use. There was some debate over clearly formatting prize categories on promotional materials for clarity.
The commission also addressed equipment for open gym activities, noting the availability of pickleball equipment and the potential need for additional frisbees. Discussions included retaining some frisbees for on-site use while considering how many should be available for the gym. Ensuring participants could identify their discs was flagged as an important consideration.
Attention turned to the upcoming Music in the Park event, scheduled for the 27th, and the fire department’s participation on the 20th. Concerns were raised about the shortage of sports balls for the gym, including basketballs and dodgeballs. It was suggested to secure the ball pump to prevent future losses after reports of it going missing or breaking.
