Hampden Select Board Considers Honoring Local History in New Town Hall
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Hampden Board of Selectmen meeting, discussions centered on initiatives to honor local history in the new town hall, known as the NTH. Proposals include displaying historical pictures and naming rooms after notable town figures. The board also evaluated liquor permit requests and addressed community concerns regarding internet service.
The primary focus of the meeting was a proposal to use the new town hall as a space to honor Hampden’s history. A resident suggested creating plaques and naming conference rooms after significant figures from the town’s past. The town’s historical society supports the idea, offering a collection of historical photographs to enhance the initiative. The proposal also includes engaging local students in the project by having them write essays about these historical figures to be displayed alongside the images. The Select Board expressed appreciation for the initiative, emphasizing its importance as the town approaches its 150th anniversary. The board encouraged continued development of the proposal, involving both the community and local schools.
In addition to the historical initiative, the meeting addressed several logistical matters. The board approved three one-day liquor permits, one for the VFW’s end-of-summer event and two for the senior center’s art show. The board noted the VFW’s history of well-managed events and expressed confidence in the senior center’s plans.
Another topic was the status of the fiber optic committee, which is being revitalized due to residents’ dissatisfaction with current internet services. Although a previous proposal for fiber optic technology was voted down, ongoing issues with existing internet services have prompted the board to consider alternative solutions. The committee’s mandate is being expanded to explore new options and address community concerns about internet speeds and reliability.
