Bogota School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Infrastructure Milestones Amid Community Praise
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Bogota School Board meeting highlighted notable student achievements, significant infrastructure projects, and a positive shift in community perception. During the session, Superintendent Damian Kennedy and others shared updates on school activities, construction progress, and community initiatives that have fostered pride and unity among students and residents.
One of the most prominent highlights was the report by student representative Jimenez Vargas, who detailed the accomplishments of the district’s athletic teams. The football team achieved a historic win in their first home game on a new field, remaining undefeated. Additionally, the boys’ varsity cross-country team secured first place, while the girls’ team finished third among nearly 20 North Jersey teams. The Bogota volleyball team also celebrated a victory, winning the 2025 Pramis High School Jersey Classic Championship. These achievements were sources of pride for the community.
Superintendent Kennedy provided updates on the district’s infrastructure projects, emphasizing the recent installation of an elevator in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) building, with plans to occupy the facility soon. The high school auditorium and Bixby gym renovations are on track for completion in a few weeks. Kennedy expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that introduced courtesy busing for local students. This initiative avoided the need for a costly referendum.
A speaker at the meeting praised the board for fostering a positive and inclusive environment, contrasting it with past perceptions of the district. They highlighted the pride instilled in the community through improvements such as new band uniforms and the CTE building’s renovations, which have inspired student competitions. The speaker further addressed the installation of safety measures in schools, including partitions known as “man traps,” following a recent incident at Steen School. These efforts, supported by the local police department, aim to enhance student safety and reflect ongoing collaboration with local government.
Traffic management around Bixby School was another topic of discussion, with improvements attributed to communication between the council and police department. The proactive measures taken to ensure smooth traffic flow underscore the district’s focus on student well-being. Despite the positive atmosphere, the speaker acknowledged detractors who spread misinformation about tax implications, asserting that the board’s smart investments have not burdened taxpayers.
