Long Hill School Board Discusses School Year Preparations and New Strategic Plan
- Meeting Overview:
In the latest meeting of the Long Hill Township Board of Education, discussions focused on personnel changes, infrastructure improvements, and the unveiling of a new five-year strategic plan.
The meeting commenced with the introduction of new staff members. Among the new hires, Stephanie Pchowski was welcomed as an eighth-grade mathematics and Algebra 1 teacher. Described as enthusiastic about the district’s new I Ready materials, Pchowski’s local ties and commitment were emphasized. Additionally, Jamon Lee, now a sixth-grade science teacher, brings expertise in earth science and a collaborative approach, having previously served in a temporary capacity.
Infrastructure upgrades were also a focal point, with updates from the buildings and grounds committee. Significant improvements were highlighted, including completed sidewalk repairs and new flooring in the main office of Gillette School. Installation of a new HVAC system and sound system at Millington School were noted, alongside a new water filling station in progress. These enhancements aim to create a safer and more conducive learning environment for students. The committee also addressed a media center roof issue that has since been resolved, further ensuring that facilities are prepared for the academic year.
A key highlight of the meeting was the introduction of the district’s new mission, vision, and motto, forming the backbone of a strategic plan designed to guide educational goals over the next five years. These statements will be prominently displayed on district agendas and the website.
In alignment with these strategic objectives, the district aims to implement the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) in teaching and learning, expand a student mentoring program piloted last spring, and repurpose Central’s old media center into a learning commons by early November. Enhancing community engagement is also a priority, with the merger of the Friday flyer and school emails into a single weekly update that has received positive feedback from families.
The board also discussed financial updates, including the approval of a resolution to change banking institutions to Carney Bank, which offers competitive terms and interest rates. A late federal grant allocation for Title I programs was received, amounting to $54,000, though this marked a decrease from the previous year. Additionally, transportation logistics have been streamlined to facilitate efficient transit for athletic teams between Central and Millington.
The technology committee reported the installation of 12 new classroom displays and the initiation of wireless casting in 15 classrooms.
As part of its community outreach, the Long Hill Education Foundation announced the commencement of afterschool program sign-ups, with reduced tuition rates and provisions for tuition assistance. The foundation’s annual gala, scheduled for November 14, will feature dinner, dancing, and a “tricky tray,” fostering community engagement and support for educational initiatives.
Concluding the meeting, the superintendent reported a smooth start to the school year, which included positive feedback on building conditions and an increase in enrollment numbers from 864 to 880 students. New staff orientation and a focus on the new math program and MTSS framework were highlighted as critical components in improving student outcomes.
