Hillsborough Township Takes Action on Safety and Community Engagement, Celebrates Local Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Hillsborough Borough Council meeting focused on public safety initiatives, community engagement, and the recognition of local achievements. Key discussions centered around the installation of traffic safety measures, the promotion of local businesses, and the acknowledgment of outstanding student accomplishments. Additionally, the meeting highlighted various public safety campaigns and announced upcoming community events.
A major topic of discussion was public safety, specifically traffic concerns near Sunnyme School. Committee members advocated for the installation of a traffic light at a dangerous intersection to improve safety for school buses and pedestrians. This proposal was part of a broader consent agenda focusing on public safety, which included acquiring new vehicles and body cameras for the police department. The committee unanimously approved these measures.
In addition to traffic safety, the Hillsborough Fire District collaborated with the National Fire Protection Association to address the growing concern over lithium-ion battery safety in homes. Residents were invited to a special mass honoring emergency personnel, highlighting the township’s appreciation for first responders and their vital role in ensuring public safety.
Economic development and local business recognition were also topics. The committee highlighted the winners of the 2025 Hillsborough Business Association annual awards, encouraging residents to support local establishments. A well water testing event was announced, with the Hillsborough Health Department emphasizing the importance of understanding the differences between well water and public water systems. The council also reported on ongoing road improvements, including the completion of the 2025 paving plan and upcoming projects on Amwell Road and Duke’s Parkway West.
The meeting recognized three students from the Academy for Health and Medical Sciences for their achievements in the Skills USA national competition. Nor Fatima, Vdant Ravi, and Vibav Vujini were celebrated for their gold medal performances and community involvement. The students’ accomplishments were met with applause and commendations.
In a gesture of community recognition, a representative from Congressman Kian’s office presented a certificate of special congressional recognition to the mayor for his contributions to local initiatives, such as the “Walk in the Park” program. This acknowledgment highlighted the mayor’s ongoing efforts to foster community engagement and promote healthy living.
The council also addressed sustainability and infrastructure. Discussions included the success of a Compost 101 class attended by over 80 participants, and ongoing construction work on Route 206. The Department of Public Works was commended for their efforts in tree trimming and removal, focusing on safety and hazard mitigation. In a related matter, a letter opposing increased truck weights and lengths was discussed, highlighting concerns over potential road damage.
As Halloween approached, the Park and Recreation Department announced family-friendly events, including a children’s Halloween party and a dog parade. Early voting for the 2025 general election was promoted, with designated hours provided for residents.
Proclamations were made for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, National Down Syndrome Acceptance Month, and Respect Life Month.
The meeting concluded with public comments, where a resident expressed frustration over the condition of Montgomery Road, urging the council to prioritize its improvement.
