Millburn Town Council Celebrates Local Artist, Tackles Community Safety and Development Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Millburn Town Council meeting, members celebrated a local artist’s contribution to the town’s 250th anniversary while addressing various community concerns, including ongoing construction disruptions, pedestrian safety, and affordable housing challenges.
A highlight of the meeting was the introduction of Jonah Dubdan, a high school student who won a logo design contest for Millburn’s 250th celebration. Dubdan’s design, featuring the iconic town mill and the Rahway River, will serve as the official symbol for the celebration, representing Millburn at events leading up to July 4, 2026. The Mayor commended Dubdan’s artistic achievement and the council applauded his contribution.
Safety and ongoing construction projects were concerns for residents and council members alike. With the Essex Street construction set to begin, residents were informed about lane closures and changes to traffic patterns. The council emphasized the importance of communicating these changes to minimize disruption, especially given past issues with construction-related disturbances. Residents voiced frustrations over construction crews starting work earlier than allowed, causing chaos on the streets with trucks idling and debris obstructing pathways. Concerns were raised about safety, particularly the risks posed to families and the lack of communication from construction teams.
In light of these concerns, a stop work order was issued for the Silverman project to ensure compliance with regulations. The council expressed willingness to collaborate with developers to address these issues. Additionally, pedestrian safety on Chatham Road was a topic of discussion, with plans to move the walkway to improve safety. The council also addressed the issue of residents leaving trash bags curbside without cans, reiterating the ordinance requirements and the potential for violations.
Affordable housing at Nine Main Street was another issue, with the township filing an appeal against a compliance order related to the project. The appeal centers on concerns about the project’s location at a contaminated site, and the township is exploring alternative development locations. Residents expressed the need for a more active role in constructing housing on town-owned properties rather than outsourcing to private developers.
The meeting also included updates on flood mitigation efforts, with ongoing assessments of rainwater capacity in certain areas and discussions about open space tax fund bylaws. A flood mitigation public session was scheduled for later in the month.
In addition to these topics, the council discussed the introduction of a student environmental group for high school students, aimed at engaging youth in sustainability efforts. This initiative is part of the Environmental Commission’s broader goals to promote environmental awareness within the community.
Public comments highlighted further concerns, including the potential closure of the Millburn post office, which residents opposed due to its importance for local services despite its current dysfunction. Issues surrounding the post office’s service quality, such as stolen mail and inadequate staffing, were raised, with suggestions for the township to consider acquiring the property.
Pedestrian safety, especially around school zones, was a recurring theme, with calls for better enforcement and educational initiatives to address distracted driving.
The meeting concluded with discussions on improving the condition of recreational fields, with residents urging the council to prioritize these projects to prevent further injuries and setbacks. The council recognized the importance of public engagement in planning these improvements, emphasizing the need for community input to align projects with residents’ expectations.
