Hanover Town Council Tackles Traffic Concerns and Food Insecurity in a Lively Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Hanover Town Council meeting on October 9th, 2025, was marked by discussions on issues, including traffic safety concerns in the Cedar Knolls area and efforts to address food insecurity among local residents.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to the ongoing debate over traffic regulations in the Cedar Knolls area, specifically the one-way closure of Forest Way and the impact it has had on surrounding streets. Residents Mary Jacobowski and Rosemary Randolph voiced concerns about increased traffic congestion and safety risks stemming from the current traffic management system. Jacobowski noted the 100% occupancy of nearby condominiums as a change since the initial decision was made, stating, “If safety is an issue, let’s address safety,” and urging the council to reconsider the current traffic setup.
Randolph echoed these sentiments. She proposed a survey to gather insights from local residents. The council acknowledged the residents’ concerns, emphasizing that the decision to close Forest Way was based on discussions and consultations with engineers and law enforcement officials. They reiterated their commitment to periodically reviewing traffic decisions.
The meeting also addressed food insecurity, with resident Lindsay Hollerin raising concerns about access to food at the Red Carpet facility. Hollerin shared her outreach efforts to deliver food and essentials to residents, only to be warned of trespassing. She requested a resolution to allow her to drop off food at the Hanover Police Department or have police escort her to the location, emphasizing the importance of supporting those in need. Hollerin stated, “I’m ultimately just bringing food to the people that have asked me to bring it to them.”
In response, the council noted potential legal challenges in offering assistance as a private citizen and suggested exploring a compromise for a separate meeting place for food distribution. However, Hollerin highlighted the difficulties faced by residents without transportation, emphasizing the need for accessible solutions.
Further highlighting community efforts, Terry Beard from the Whippy section of Hanover Township expressed gratitude for the mayor’s leadership in addressing housing issues for residents at local hotels. Beard noted his two-year advocacy to help individuals secure housing and overcome bureaucratic hurdles, commending the mayor’s role in facilitating progress. He emphasized the emotional toll of the situation, with many affected individuals having lost essential documents while homeless, complicating their road to stability.
Apart from these issues, the council introduced several ordinances addressing nuisances related to bullying and harassment, regulations for electric bicycles and scooters, and funding for infrastructure improvements at the Whipponong Library. A committee member emphasized the significance of the ordinance addressing bullying, recalling experiences on the Board of Education and praising the township’s collaborative efforts to promote community safety.
The meeting also highlighted various community initiatives, such as the Economic Development Advisory Committee’s successful local business networking event and the Engineering Department’s report on completed road reconstruction projects. A representative from the Environmental Green Team shared the success of a recent paper shred event, which collected over two tons of materials and raised 500 pounds of food for the Interfaith Food Bank.
The meeting concluded with discussions on upcoming community events, such as the Masquerade at Malipartis Park and a senior luncheon celebrating the 55th anniversary of the senior club. The council also encouraged residents to participate in the upcoming local elections.
