Howell Residents Demand Action on Roadway Safety Amid Rising Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
During the Howell Town Council meeting, residents voiced concerns over escalating traffic safety issues in their neighborhoods, calling for immediate action. The discussions centered around reports of reckless driving, excessive speeding, and a perceived lack of enforcement, particularly in the southern section of Howell. This prompted council members to assure attendees of their commitment to addressing these pressing safety issues.
Residents Karen Mloud and Megan Jimenez were among those who shared personal accounts highlighting the dangers on local roads. Mloud recounted a near-miss incident on Ford Road where chaotic driving behaviors, such as cars disregarding lane rules and pulling onto shoulders, have become commonplace. Her commentary painted a picture of the south Howell roads as resembling the “wild west,” expressing frustration over the community’s perceived neglect since the local school closure. Mloud implored the council for increased police presence and urgent attention to problematic intersections like Ford and Kent, and Lanes Mill and Kent.
Jimenez echoed these concerns, detailing her own harrowing experience of being struck by a vehicle while taking her child to school. She noted frequent occurrences of excessive speeding, such as vehicles traveling 55 mph in a 25 mph zone on Sammy Drive. For many residents, the installation of their own slowdown signs has become a necessity, pointing to a need for official safety measures. Jimenez urged the council to consider solutions like lowering speed limits, installing speed bumps, or increasing police presence during peak traffic times to enhance safety for children and residents.
In response, a council representative acknowledged the gravity of the issues raised and assured residents of ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety. The council outlined plans to collaborate with the police department, targeting enforcement on roads identified by residents and emphasizing the importance of data collection to inform effective strategies. The possibility of involving county law enforcement, such as the sheriff’s department, was also discussed to bolster monitoring of problematic intersections.
Moreover, resident Richard Krug proposed the use of radar-based signs and photographic equipment to capture license plates of speeders. However, a council member noted legal limitations, citing a New Jersey Supreme Court ruling that deems speed cameras unconstitutional due to the impossibility of directly confronting offenders. Despite these challenges, the council expressed commitment to increasing enforcement efforts and encouraged residents to maintain communication with the police department, emphasizing that public requests are influential in prioritizing issues.
Beyond traffic concerns, the meeting saw the introduction of a new initiative to reinstate a recreation advisory committee. This committee aims to involve representatives from various sports leagues to gather input on improving township fields and facilities. A council member highlighted the importance of community engagement, particularly for families involved in sports, and called for volunteers to participate in this advisory committee, with appointments expected to commence by January.
As the meeting progressed, the council unanimously approved a series of resolutions, including several capital ordinances. These ordinances allocated funds for GIS mapping, sewer utility equipment acquisition, and the purchase of vehicles and equipment, totaling over $1 million. The unanimous support from council members underscored a collective agreement on the necessity of these funding initiatives.
