Acushnet Housing Authority Faces Architectural Oversight and Prepares for Staff Retirement
- Meeting Overview:
The Acushnet Housing Authority meeting highlighted two developments: a costly architectural oversight in an electrical project and the upcoming retirement of a key maintenance supervisor. The authority approved a change order of $46,054.19 to address the oversight, and plans are underway to find a replacement for the retiring supervisor, Michael Chopper.
A discussion took place regarding an architectural error in a project to replace the main distribution panel. The problem stemmed from the original architect’s failure to measure maintenance utility rooms accurately, resulting in a redesign to move the main circuit panel outside the buildings. This oversight not only increased costs but also complicated the project as the existing distribution box was found to be obsolete. The Housing Authority plans to seek reimbursement from the state, which is funding the project at 100%. Additionally, the authority stands to gain approximately $80,000 in administrative fees from the project, providing some financial relief.
In a personal announcement, Michael Chopper, a long-serving maintenance supervisor, tendered his retirement effective January 16, 2026. The board expressed its gratitude for his contributions. Chopper’s work was particularly noted for enhancing the housing authority’s reputation among contractors. The process to advertise and fill his position will begin soon, with hopes to find a candidate capable of continuing his legacy of excellence.
