Willmar City Council Approves New Health Insurance Plan with Lower Cost Increases
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Willmar City Council approved a new health insurance plan for city employees, opting for a proposal from the Minnesota Healthcare Consortium. This plan presents a 7% increase in premiums, lower than the previous 20% increase, and offers more flexibility in coverage options for employees.
The decision to switch was prompted by an opt-out clause in the city’s current contract with PEEP, which allowed for reconsideration when renewal rates exceeded 20%. The Minnesota Healthcare Consortium plan not only offers a more modest increase but also provides employees with diversified options, including different combinations of deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses. The council highlighted that this change would not disrupt existing health savings account arrangements or require employees to change primary care providers, due to the plan’s open access network. Additionally, an employee assistance program is being proposed for a minimal additional cost, aimed at improving employee well-being and potentially reducing emergency room visits.
The council discussed potential employee objections but concluded that the new plan is advantageous, offering better coverage without sacrificing network flexibility or increasing administrative burdens. The employer contribution structure remains consistent across all plan options, providing employees the autonomy to choose based on personal healthcare needs.
