Franklin Library Board Approves Renovation Plans and Coin Sales for Franklin 250 Celebrations
- Meeting Overview:
The Franklin Township Public Library Board of Trustees meeting on October 22, 2025, addressed developments, including approving renovation plans for the library and a fundraising initiative involving the sale of commemorative coins for Franklin’s 250th anniversary. The board also discussed holiday schedules and procedural matters.
The primary focus of the meeting was the library’s renovation plan, which aims to reconfigure existing spaces to enhance patron experience. The proposal includes converting an area currently occupied by computers into an open space with chairs and tables, allowing patrons to utilize their own laptops with the library’s Wi-Fi. This change responds to concerns about noise levels in the current setup and aims to provide a more conducive environment for concentration. The planned reduction of public computers from 16 to 12 is offset by the addition of quiet rooms, a much-needed facility for patrons engaging in activities requiring privacy, such as Zoom meetings or personal consultations. The board discussed a timeline for presenting the architect’s proposal, with a goal to finalize details either by the December meeting or possibly in November, if more time is required. Further discussions with the architect were deemed necessary to address aspects like the roof and HVAC system, which are critical yet currently underdeveloped components of the renovation plan.
In addition to the renovation plans, the board approved a proposal to sell commemorative coins at the library as part of the Franklin 250 celebrations. Designed by Bob L. Court, these coins aim to raise approximately $6,000 to support the town’s anniversary events. The library will act as a point of sale, with no upfront investment required. The strategy also includes distributing the coins through local businesses, such as restaurants, to increase visibility and encourage community participation.
The meeting also included a review and approval of the library’s holiday closing schedule for 2026. Adjustments were made to accommodate low patronage periods, such as the days surrounding the Fourth of July and Christmas. The board unanimously passed a motion to adopt the proposed schedule.
A procedural adjustment was made regarding the December meeting schedule. The board decided to move the meeting from December 23rd to December 16th, acknowledging the proximity of the original date to the Christmas holiday. This change was also unanimously agreed upon.
Director January Adams also presented her regular reports, beginning with financial updates, which showed no outstanding issues. She addressed the impact of Baker and Taylor’s closure, a longstanding vendor, on the library’s operations. However, she reassured the board that alternative vendors, such as Amazon and Ingram, were ready to fill the gap.
Adams highlighted recent library events, including a successful signage unveiling attended by Francis and Anna Demente, and the library’s participation in the Manhattan Short Film Festival, which traditionally attracts significant attendance. Additionally, she reported on the youth services department’s involvement in back-to-school events at local schools.
