Principal Resignation and Student Concerns Dominate West Essex School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The West Essex School Board meeting was highlighted by the announcement of the resignation of Dr. Dun Levy, Principal of West Essex Middle School, effective December 31st, and a student report that raised concerns regarding the conditions and resources available to students. The board also discussed upcoming events and initiatives, as well as recognized various student achievements.
Dr. Dun Levy, who has served as principal since 2019, announced her resignation, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead the school through the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. She reflected on her tenure, highlighting the introduction of programs such as the academic foundations course and a math mastery program, which support struggling learners. Dr. Dun Levy also mentioned the peer leadership program and the expansion of the Read Across America initiative aimed at increasing student engagement. The school community expressed appreciation for her leadership, and the board recognized her contributions to the positive developments at West Essex Middle School.
The board has recommended Mr. Caesar D. Labberto to serve as interim principal beginning January 1st. Mr. Labberto brings extensive experience within the district, having held multiple administrative roles. The board emphasized the importance of finding a permanent successor who resonates with the district’s core values, and they have initiated a search process to fill the vacancy.
Attention was also given to a report presented by a student representative, who highlighted several issues within the school. The Math Lab was described as under-resourced, with one teacher managing a large number of students. The student representative also raised concerns about the workload faced by students involved in sports or employment, advocating for a more flexible late policy that would allow students to negotiate deadlines with their teachers based on their schedules.
A significant issue discussed was the condition of the school’s locker rooms, which were reported to be outdated and in need of repair. The student representative pointed out the lack of locks on doors and flooding in restrooms, emphasizing the need for renovations to provide a safer and more functional environment for student athletes. The board acknowledged these concerns, expressing appreciation for the insights and highlighting the importance of maintaining open communication between students and the administration to address these challenges effectively.
In addition to Dr. Dun Levy’s resignation and student concerns, the meeting featured discussions on upcoming school events and initiatives. Students participated in the “No Place for Hate” initiative, focusing on the theme “harmony happens when every note counts.” This effort involved students signing an annual pledge in their English classes, with the goal of fostering a united stand against hate. The school also hosted a “Cookie with a Cop” event, sponsored by the PTO, which aimed to build rapport between students and local law enforcement through informal interactions.
The board also recognized the achievements of the middle school girls’ field hockey team, which secured its 13th consecutive championship, and announced the return of the Washington, D.C. trip, scheduled for March 19th and 20th. This trip, postponed since before the pandemic, promises to provide educational experiences aligned with the social studies curriculum.
The meeting concluded with the recognition of student achievements. The conclusion of marking period one led to the naming of “ShopRite Stars,” with awards presented in academics, athletics, arts, leadership, and community service. Students such as Kash Sai, Addie Manella, and Emma Riley Casper were acknowledged for their contributions in these areas. Additionally, the school celebrated AP Capstone diploma recipients, a distinction achieved by a select group of students worldwide, including Brook Comerberg and Sedarth Suknan.
