Brigantine City Declares Emergency Over Beach Erosion, Urges Federal and State Intervention
- Meeting Overview:
The Brigantine City Council meeting on November 5, 2025, revolved around urgent environmental and infrastructure issues. The council declared a local state of emergency due to severe beach erosion and sought immediate state and federal assistance. Additionally, they discussed grant funding for road projects and contract approvals for public works.
The council passed a resolution declaring a local state of emergency to address significant beach erosion, which has been exacerbated by recent storms, including Hurricane Aaron and several nor’easters. The erosion has resulted in the loss of approximately three feet of sand on the north end of Brigantine’s beaches. This critical situation has prompted collaboration with Congressman Jeff Van Drew and other South Jersey mayors to push for emergency beach replenishment. Highlighting the absence of dedicated federal funds for such projects, the council emphasized the ongoing legislative efforts to secure permanent financial resources for coastal communities across the United States.
Furthermore, the Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a federal study to evaluate the effectiveness of hard structures like groins and jetties in mitigating beach erosion. This study, which includes Brigantine among other locations, will assess whether these structures could provide a more sustainable solution compared to frequent beach replenishment cycles. The study aims to determine the most cost-effective approach, whether through continued replenishment or the installation of permanent structures.
In addition to environmental concerns, the council approved several resolutions related to infrastructure improvements. A New Jersey Department of Transportation grant of $269,995 will be used for the second phase of repaving Harbor Beach Boulevard. The council awarded a contract worth $448,842 for this reconstruction project, continuing Brigantine’s strategy of leveraging grant money to manage expenses and control taxes effectively.
The meeting also covered other routine contract approvals, including catering services at the Brigantine Links Golf Course and the installation of a new motor at a local well.
The county’s collaboration with Brigantine has resulted in over a million dollars in grants to enhance local infrastructure, although some temporary closures for construction have been necessary to expedite these upgrades.
