New Ulm City Council Advances Capital Improvement Plan with Emphasis on Safety and Infrastructure
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm City Council discussed the city’s 2026 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) during its latest meeting, focusing on infrastructure upgrades and pedestrian safety improvements. The plan includes reconstruction projects, utility upgrades, and pedestrian crosswalk enhancements, particularly in areas with significant foot traffic. The Council aims to ensure these projects align with the city’s Complete Streets and Active Transportation policies.
The proposed 2026 Capital Improvement Plan was the centerpiece of the meeting, highlighting the city’s focus on improving infrastructure and safety. One of the key projects is the reconstruction of State Street between 12th North and 16th North Street, which will include utility upgrades and the addition of crosswalks at every intersection. This segment is heavily traveled, especially during events at the fairgrounds, making pedestrian safety improvements a priority.
The Council also discussed enhancements to the trail system, particularly the patching of trails along North High Avenue. The plans aim to address issues caused by large elm trees that have damaged the trail surfaces. Additionally, new crosswalks and pedestrian crossing devices are proposed near the MLC soccer fields on Fifth North Street. These upgrades are designed to improve safety for children and parents attending soccer events.
Looking ahead, the Council reviewed projects extending to 2030, including major roadway reconstructions and utility replacements. Notably, the Center Street Corridor improvements slated for 2030 will include roundabout enhancements and possibly a pedestrian tunnel, though the feasibility of the tunnel is being assessed due to potential utility conflicts.
Council members discussed the importance of these projects in making New Ulm more walkable and accessible for all residents. While some community members have expressed support for a pedestrian tunnel on Center Street, the Council emphasized the need for thorough planning and cost assessment before making any commitments.
