Caldwell-West Caldwell School Board Meeting Highlights Student Safety and Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The Caldwell-West Caldwell School Board meeting on November 10, 2025, focused on various topics, including a detailed report on student safety and incidents at district schools, community engagement through student-led initiatives, and the recognition of a significant Eagle Scout project. The meeting, held in the cafeteria of James Caldwell High School, provided a platform for addressing both ongoing and new matters concerning the district’s educational environment and community involvement.
One focus of the meeting was the Superintendent’s report on school safety, highlighting incidents of violence, vandalism, and harassment in the district. The report, covering data from January 1 to June 19, 2025, was a mandatory submission to the New Jersey Department of Education. It revealed 42 instances categorized under violence or vandalism at James Caldwell High School, with Grover Cleveland Middle School reporting 18 such cases. Additionally, the report outlined cases of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) across the district, with two confirmed and three alleged cases at the high school level, and five confirmed and eight alleged cases at the middle school. While Jefferson Elementary and Wilson and Harrison elementary schools reported no incidents, Lincoln Elementary had five instances of violence or vandalism and two alleged HIB instances. Washington School recorded one instance of violence or vandalism, one confirmed HIB, and one alleged HIB. The Superintendent also noted that two district-wide training sessions had been conducted during this period, emphasizing the district’s proactive measures to ensure student safety.
They shared recent activities at Grover Cleveland Middle School, including an ultimate football tournament and a spirited school week with themed dress days. A Veterans Day assembly was a highlight, honoring alumni who served in the military. The students also announced a Thanksgiving food drive and upcoming NJSLA adaptive testing. The enthusiasm and leadership displayed by these students underscored the school’s vibrant culture and commitment to community service.
Adding to the community-focused agenda, Eagle Scout Mitchell Courtright presented his project, which involved creating a path at Lincoln Elementary School. The project required significant physical labor and volunteer coordination, with Courtright detailing the careful planning and execution process. The path, approximately 100 feet long and 3 feet wide, was developed with the help of 29 volunteers over two days. Courtright’s efforts were recognized by the board, who commended his dedication and the project’s positive impact on the school environment. A photo opportunity was arranged to celebrate his achievement.
The Superintendent also reflected on a Veterans Day ceremony attended earlier that day, expressing gratitude for the performance by the school chorus, which evoked an emotional response. The chorus, instrumentalists, and the creative talents of staff and students were acknowledged for their contributions to the event. The board president echoed these sentiments, emphasizing appreciation for veterans’ sacrifices and their ongoing service.
In addition to these presentations, the board addressed various administrative matters. A motion was made to approve an HIV item under the curriculum and technology section, which passed with four votes in favor and one abstention. The meeting also covered topics such as salary guide movements, the appointment of a non-athletic extracurricular club at the high school, and the certification of funds related to finance. Additionally, the contract for the swim team to use facilities at NJIT was discussed, along with emergency evacuation drills for buses and facility usage for dance recitals at the high school, which were noted as revenue-generating events. Policy readings, including those concerning the use of physical restraint, electronic surveillance, and cooperative agreements with local law enforcement, were acknowledged as first readings.
The board meeting concluded with an invitation for public comments, although no further inquiries were made. The board expressed anticipation for the upcoming high school play, “Midsummer Jersey,” encouraging community attendance and support, especially as it is free for students. The meeting was adjourned with a motion to enter executive session, and the next meeting was scheduled to take place at Washington Elementary School the following Monday.
