Union Township Council Tackles Public Safety and Community Initiatives at Recent Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Union Township Committee meeting focused on public safety and community development, highlighted by an overnight DUI enforcement operation resulting in multiple arrests and significant ordinance adoptions. The meeting also addressed community engagement initiatives, including upcoming recreational events and infrastructure improvements.
The meeting’s most pressing topic was the detailed report on a DUI enforcement operation conducted by local officers on October 31st. During this operation, officers stopped a vehicle in a Wawa parking lot, which led to multiple arrests. The driver of the Volkswagen was wanted by authorities in East Orange, and when officers attempted to apprehend him, he resisted arrest. A passenger fled the scene but was eventually captured in a Lowe’s parking lot after a pursuit. The rear passenger, who refused to exit the vehicle, was found with a loaded handgun containing hollow-point ammunition, ecstasy, marijuana, and counterfeit currency. All three individuals faced multiple charges and were taken to the county jail.
Following the public safety update, the meeting addressed several ordinances and resolutions. A notable ordinance authorized the township to purchase a deed-restricted affordable housing unit on Waldorf Place, exercising a right of first refusal. This measure aims to maintain affordable housing availability in the community. Additionally, an ordinance creating regulations for electric scooters and bicycles was introduced.
The committee also approved the private sale of township-owned property on Maple Avenue. Another ordinance amendment related to property maintenance was introduced.
Several resolutions were also approved, including the insertion of a $50,000 grant into the 2025 municipal budget for the Kids Recreation Trust Fund, which supports youth programs. A settlement agreement in the case of Earl Walker versus the Township was resolved, and a contract for HVAC upgrades at the municipal building was awarded to Wayar Industries Corp. for up to $647,000. The committee also approved a grant application to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs for $1,825,000 to support a property acquisition project, highlighting ongoing efforts to secure funding for community development.
In community engagement, upcoming recreational events were announced, such as a volleyball clinic for middle school students and winter basketball programs. The senior center will host a health and wellness event and a Veterans Day tribute, along with trips and performances to foster community involvement. The Deputy Mayor emphasized the need for community support for the local food bank, urging residents to donate non-perishable food items. Residents were also informed about the New Jersey American Water Lead Service Line Replacement Program, which aims to replace lead service lines to ensure water quality.
The committee report included updates on the 250th year celebration of the township, with events such as a screening at DMK theater and activities hosted by the Union Township Historical Society. A major Lego project at Union High School was also highlighted as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Public Works reported on recent activities, including street sweeping, pothole repairs, and tree planting as part of the 2025 program. The Fire Department responded to 201 calls in October, with incidents such as a vehicle accident involving an e-bike and a major collision on the Garden State Parkway.
