Littleton School Committee Discusses Significant Improvement in Student Test Scores and Curriculum Adjustments
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Littleton School Committee meeting, members discussed a range of topics, with attention given to the significant improvements in student performance on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System Test (MCAS). A particular focus was placed on the academic achievement gap between male and female students, and the introduction of new educational curricula. The committee also addressed the potential dissolution of the Friends of Alumni Field organization and the financial implications for the Littleton Athletic Boosters.
One item at the meeting was the presentation of MCAS results, which revealed a marked improvement in English Language Arts (ELA) scores across the district. The percentage of students exceeding expectations rose from 10% to 24%, while those partially meeting expectations decreased by 12 points. This was attributed to focused efforts on enhancing ELA instruction, particularly breaking down the subject into reading and writing components. Despite the overall improvement, challenges remain for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), whose performance did not meet expectations, prompting further analysis and targeted interventions.
In mathematics, the student growth percentile was reported at an encouraging 71.2 points, with an increase in the median exceeding scores from 19% to 41%. The conversation acknowledged the need for targeted support for students with IEPs, who lagged behind their peers despite improvements among students with 504 plans. The committee emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to address these disparities and improve outcomes for all students.
The introduction of the “Wit and Wisdom” curriculum was another focal point, particularly its impact on student performance in grades three through five. Initial assessments showed a slight dip in ELA scores, anticipated during the curriculum’s first year of implementation. Teachers have been utilizing benchmark assessment data to identify students needing additional support.
The meeting also touched on the proposed updates to competency determination policies following a ballot initiative that altered state regulations. These changes will require students to demonstrate mastery in subjects such as English language arts, algebra, geometry, and science, as well as U.S. history for the class of 2027 onwards. The committee expressed satisfaction with these changes, highlighting that they would allow students to receive more tailored support in line with their IEPs.
A noteworthy discussion involved the potential dissolution of the Friends of Alumni Field organization. The committee considered the transfer of remaining funds to the Littleton Athletic Boosters, recognizing it as a practical solution. The motion to acknowledge this transition was passed unanimously.
The meeting concluded with updates from various subcommittees, including the policy, budget, and PMDC subcommittees. The budget subcommittee reported on a proposed increase of 2.75% for the upcoming fiscal year, while the policy subcommittee moved several policies to a second reading. An update from the Shaker Lane building committee was also provided, noting the narrowing down of bids for an upcoming project.
