Pierz City Council Approves Key Park Improvements with Sourcewell Grant
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Pierz City Council meeting, members approved significant improvements to Pierce Park, supported by a $40,000 Sourcewell grant. This decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance local recreational facilities, including a comprehensive playground equipment upgrade.
During the meeting, council members were briefed on the Sourcewell grant, which had been secured to support park improvements. A detailed presentation revealed that the total cost of replacing playground equipment at Pierce Park was approximately $264,830. The council was informed that $38,000 was already allocated for playground equipment from existing funds, complemented by a $25,000 grant from Essentia. Despite the substantial funding already in place, the council recognized the necessity of raising an additional $40,000 to qualify for the full Sourcewell grant.
To bridge the funding gap, it was suggested that $7,000 would be added to the playground fund in January. Council members expressed optimism about securing further funding sources, including potential partnerships with local organizations such as the Lions Club and the fire relief and snowmobile clubs. The urgency of the situation was underscored, as the council needed to notify Sourcewell of their grant acceptance by December 1st, with the risk of future ineligibility if the grant was not utilized.
In addition to discussing fundraising strategies, the meeting also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance park facilities. The council approved a plan to offer a $25 gift card with each park membership sold from the following Wednesday until December 31st. This initiative, which mirrored a successful program from the previous year, was unanimously approved.
Further, the council approved a proposal to upgrade the flooring of a park facility to meet county regulations. A quote of $5,535 from Watercott for commercial flooring installation was accepted. The council’s decision to proceed with these upgrades, combined with the approved purchase of equipment from Brit’s store, which included a commercial sink and shelving, demonstrated a focused effort to enhance the park’s infrastructure.
Beyond park improvements, the council addressed various other agenda items. Notably, the council approved an amendment to the city ordinance regarding the use of motorized golf carts on city streets. This amendment aimed to update regulations, including permitting requirements and penalties for violations. Despite opening the floor for public comment, no feedback was received during the hearing, leading to the ordinance’s unanimous approval.
The meeting also saw the approval of a request from the Piers Healy Honor Society to conduct their annual toy drive. The society plans to place collection jars in local businesses from November 24th to December 7th, with a collection on December 8th. Last year’s drive raised approximately $1,500, and the council expressed appreciation for the initiative, encouraging continued community support.
In financial matters, the council reviewed and approved the claims and treasurer’s reports for October, with total claims amounting to $438,8940 and an ending balance of $338,523.61. Additionally, the council approved a request for a public hearing to discuss the 2026 property taxes, scheduled for November 24th.
The council also discussed the management of city funds related to the park complex. A proposal was made to use the remaining balance of $17,287.25 from the 710 fund to pay back an interfund loan rather than rolling it over into the park fund. The council showed general agreement on this approach, emphasizing the importance of addressing loans even gradually.
In a brief update from the city administrator, it was noted that Sourcewell funding for a public works truck had been secured, with delivery expected by the new year. Additionally, work at city apartments was nearing completion, with furnace installation scheduled for the week, and further service plans in place.
