Edina School Board Highlights Student-Led Initiatives for Freshman Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The Edina School Board meeting on November 10th spotlighted innovative efforts by the Edina High School (EHS) student council to improve the transition experience for incoming freshmen, alongside discussions on curriculum updates, financial strategies, and community involvement in education.
The central focus of the meeting was the “Excellence in Action” presentation by the EHS student council, which outlined a human-centered design initiative aimed at attracting and retaining freshmen. Clara Johnson, along with fellow council members Whitney Vans, Carina, and Nina Cruz, detailed their project goals to create marketing programs tailored to eighth graders and prospective high school students. Utilizing design thinking, the students began by surveying peers to empathize with their perspectives and discovered that misconceptions about EHS’s size and academic offerings were prevalent.
To counter these misconceptions, the council proposed a series of initiatives. A revamped school tour experience would feature student panels and welcome tables offering EHS merchandise and information. They also suggested a shadowing program enabling prospective students to experience classes firsthand.
The students also discussed addressing misunderstandings about EHS’s sports programs. While the school is known for its athletic achievements, the council noted that many families mistakenly believe only elite athletes are welcome. The students emphasized the inclusivity of sports and other extracurricular activities. The presentation concluded with a call for enhanced communication to correct misconceptions and promote EHS’s community spirit.
The board expressed appreciation for the student council’s insights and efforts, recognizing the importance of student voices in shaping the school’s image and outreach strategies. Following the presentation, the board transitioned to other agenda items, including curriculum reviews and policy discussions.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the curriculum review process, particularly in English Language Arts (ELA) and social studies, driven by changes in Minnesota state standards. The board discussed the collaborative efforts of educators facilitated by Mark Carlson and Bethany Van Odell, emphasizing the application of implementation science to ensure thorough resource allocation and decision-making.
The meeting also addressed the district’s data metrics plan, highlighting progress in ELA and math proficiency as measured by MCA assessments. The board celebrated the achievements of special education students meeting Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and recognized the need for ongoing support and resources to further enhance educational outcomes.
Financial matters were also discussed, with the board approving the authority to issue general obligation refunding bonds series 2025A. This decision, presented by the finance director, aims to refinance existing debt at a lower interest rate, providing taxpayer savings. However, due to market uncertainties related to a federal government shutdown, the board decided to adopt a cautious approach, potentially delaying the bond sale until conditions stabilize.
In addition, the board approved the 2025-2027 health service associate collective bargaining agreement, which includes wage increases and additional paid holidays for health service associates.
The meeting concluded with discussions on policy reviews and community engagement initiatives. The board emphasized the importance of involving families in educational strategies, particularly in literacy, and reviewed feedback on the Spanish Dual Language (SDL) program placement. Ensuring continuity and high academic standards for SDL programming at Valley View Middle School was a priority.
